Transfering file from p2 to laptop drive

HI there, can somebody tell me how to get the file from my p2 card into my lap-drive. the clips show up in the viewer but I can't figure out how to get it in the drive. or the avid for that matter. I got an external drive connected to my lap-top and plan on using it as an intermediate storage for transfering into my avid later.

best

Copy the entire P2 card contents (the CONTENTS folder and LASTCLIP.TXT file) from the card to a folder on your laptop. P2 Genie makes the whole process painless.

Great, so I copy the "CONTENTS FOLDER" and Text file, not the individual video files, gotcha, could you tell me where to find the correct Avid folder to put it all in? pretty pleasssssssssse.

I had the same problem. You have to manually create the folder if you don't see it. Avid MediaFiles. Inside that make one that says 'MXF'. Inside that you can make your individual P2 folders. But only copy and paste files from the video and audio folders of the Contents folder in your P2 card.

Then launch Avid, go to the tools menu> media tool
In the dialogue box pick the Hard Drive, and Master Clips

The media tool should load all the MXF files, and then you have to drag them into your Bin.....

and Voila!!

okay thankyou, now by the way I noticed inside the avid express pro folder there is a folder named P2 and inside that a folder named 73 and inside that a folder named video and one audio, just so i know, those are not the folders I'm looking for, right?

AAhhhaaaa! I figured out that some hardware that I installed last week scrambed my directory so I reinstalled avid and there was the media files.
thanks for all the help everyone.

General Questions:

Part 1 - What happens if you only copy the mxf files to a HD ?

Part 2 - and use DVCPro Encode or AspectHD to convert them to useable clips?

Well I'm
not sure if you can stransfer the footage directly to a drive. What I'm doing is using a Cgate internal drive in a Ciig exteranl case. connected by usb 2. to my laptop. I transer the hd or sd clips directly to the cgate whenh i plug in the p2 card into the laptop. The C,gate has 250 gigs then when I'm ready for post I transfer the clips to my avid work station through usb2. works like a charm! reel fast. the great thing about the Siig case it gives me decent storage capacity and the option of transfering through usb2 or firewire800. on a large shoot I can obviously use multiple drives and swap out when their full.

about your second question I haven't used that sofware but am interested in knowing how good it works.

That depends on the program you use. The Serious Magic DVCProHD Decoder / Batch Converter don't need any other files, and neither does Edius 4 Broadcast.

Once converted to AVI format, you don't need any of the other files. However, during the conversion you will loose all of the metadata that is part of P2. If that's not important to you, there is no drawback.
