"Bloody Mary: A nightmare Collaboration by Mark Harris and Timur Civan"

I'm getting there! I've been distracted by some issues pertaining to Panasonic and B&H (other threads, other posts).

Thanks Steve!

Some more info about the instruments used on the score:

I played these live:

-Armenian Duduk (the clarinet/oboe like instrument that plays the lead melody in the first scene, known from Gladiator, Rome etc.)

-Andean/Latin-American Saxophone

-Eastern European Tupan drum (the big one heard in the end, and in the suspense scenes, a double sided bass drum)

The strings, brass and other instruments are samples, most of them from a custom collection, and there's an occasional synthesizer as well :-)

For the sound designers: some of the eerie metallic effects were created using a flex-a-tone, which is a piece of metal with two mallets attached to it resonating while bowing the metal, being able to produce a variety of pitches and tones.

Herman, are you generally a proficient player of all the instruments you use in this and other scores, or do you sometimes develop just enough proficiency to nicely execute a certain passage on a given instrument and leave it at that?

yea i kinda wondered that too.

You should check outthe Taraf Haidouks. they area gypsy band form the balkans. Thoes guys can rock out some old timey instruments. Flutes, clarinets, Fiddles. they are amazing.

I study most of these instruments a few times a week (and some even every day), and whenever using an instrument I'm less proficient in, I try to put down the best performance possible, while I try to keep my skills evolving.

They totally rock! :D

Ever since seeing them on a British TV programme I started to collect all their work. I've always been fond of the raw sound of Gypsy music, of which some say that the roots even go back all the way to India.

Review:

Script

My favorite part of this movie (next to the camera work). It actually had substance. I didn't even think about fast forwarding the whole time I was watching it. I wanted to know what was going on. I wanted to know what was about to happen. I was completely sucked into the story. So basically for you guys, that means Mission: Accomplished.

Acting

Great. The big guy was my favorite. Everyone was great. I didn't catch myself saying, "Oh my god, this is terrible acting." So again, Mission: Accomplished.

Cinematography

Excellent. Creative and well executed. There were shots that I definitely would have done differently, but a lot of the shots displayed in the movie I never would have even thought of. Great use of 35 adapter. I need to see this on a big screen.

Editing

Spot on. Excellent pacing, which could have destroyed the movie. I was extremely worried that after we saw the dead girl we would get a huge dose of the Signs effect... when the movie is scary as f*ck until you see the monster. I think I would have cut a fraction of a second off of the first time we see her. I am often a firm believer of "less is more."

Score

Perfect. I would like to know if this is going to be released through some sort of Creative Commons license. I don't have anywhere to use it now, but I'm sure it would be incredibly helpful somewhere down the road.

Overall Impressions

I knew Timur wasn't going to do us wrong here. I have been a fan of his work, so this was one of my more anticipated films. I want this on DVD. I just gotta say great job to everyone involved. Very well executed.

Thank you Kor!

WE tried so hard to make sure that ALL aspects were well covered. and the beauty of Mark and i teaming up is, his specialty is Directing Editing writing, and mine are the Visuals. Then we let Herman Witkam, handle the Audio. Neither of us were rushed, or franticly trying to do "everyhting". we had our roles, and we executed them with our full attention.

I didint know i had fans... lol

korimickster,

You would have to talk to Herman about the music. There's nothing in writing as of yet, but my assumption is that the copyright should stay with him. I mean, I kind of hope he wants it to stay with BM and BM alone, as I want to enter this into horror film fests this coming year.

Thanks for coming by and checking us out. I'm glad particularly that you liked the story.

Oh yeah:
I was extremely worried that after we saw the dead girl we would get a huge dose of the Signs effect...

Me too, brotha, me too!!!!! Glad SOMEONE vindicated my decision to show her so little. :):)

You guys make a great team. I am genuinely impressed by your movie.

I'll have to let you guys know when I am in Brooklyn visiting some of my other DVX friends next month. Maybe meet up for some eats while we drool over your new HVX?

I've been trying to get through all the films I haven't watched and there are a couple I deliberately saved til the end. BLOODY MARY was one of them. Wow. You guys put it all together. It was impossible to ignore the buzz the past week but I tried not to read reviews because I didn't want to be influenced. You certainly proved the merit of merging talents that are mutually compatible. Congrats for a killer job, dudes.

ATTN: MINI CONTEST!!!!!

WE subliminally embedded this image in the Film. This is part of MAry's HAlucinations.
This image is where the whole Bloody MAry's charachter evolved from. When mark signed me onto the project, i made this as a back story for why the charachter looks the way she does. I imagined the Step father after stabbing the mother to death, tried to to dispose of the body by burning her somewhere. The ghost is the representation of the Burned Corpse.

IF you can Find the Hidden image in BLoody Mary You will win a 25$ Gift card to the Itunes Music store!!!! Courtesy of MArk and I.

First person to post it wins. Either a screen grab, or a Minutes and seconds countr will Do!!!!!!!!!!!

HAPPY HUNTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
