My last maxtor just bit the dust. Thats 7 in a row while the cheap separately bought cases with seagates in them from 4 years ago go on and on.

I know how you feel, I'm trying to figure out how the hell to get the info off a crashed Maxtor w/o paying $700 for a drive recovery service.

Do you know if it is the drive or the enclosure that's bad?

So here's the question. If your maxtors keep dying, why do you keep getting them:) Or did you buy them all at the same time. I have 2 external maxtors that I've had for 2.5 years, no problems yet. knock, knock, knock. Although I also have a segate and a western digital with no problems either, so maybe I'm just really lucky.

i had gotten them all around the same time, 4 at work and 3 at home. At the time it seemed like the best deal and they looked cool.
Its been all my drives that are dying, the enclosures are still good. I pop out the bad drives and put in the seagates I have been getting. I also bought 2 Lacies big disks to try them and so far they are good too and this weekend Im probably going to get another Lacie500 gig to replace the Maxtor.

I guess every drive has its horror stories. My came with the LaCie 500. Ended up costing $4400. My Maxtors are chugging along fine.

$4400. DAyUM!!
what was on that? I lost most of my foley and sound effects but i used a few recovery programs and were able to get most back to transfer to a good drive.

Well I got bit by the maxtor bug today (wednesday). Bought a new 300 gig Tuesday which I put in a USB case. Transferred data around Tuesday night to free up some space on other drives. Today I was wanting to move some more stuff around... WRONG. I have been able to recover about 30gigs of the data on it but the other 250+ appears to be poo pooed, most of which there is no backup of. Drive is not even showing at all and just spinning the disks like a high speed fan. Such as life I guess. Everyone makes this so cheap and crappy you have to buy 10 of everything to make sure you get one good one. Guess I'll start paying more for better quality drives.

I have used seagate since umm first drive I had was seagate. Never had any die. knock on wood.

Maxtors have been trashy since they went from a 3 year warranty to 1 year.
Their 160 Diamond Max drives (the first one that died on me) went down 2 weeks past the 1 year warranty.
Even though they have been aquired by Seagate (5 year waranty on internal drives) I really don't expect any improvement in their reliability.
I also find it interesting that Seagate only has a 1 year warranty on their external 300GB drives. Guess they figure that externals are subject to a lot more handling that could cause problems.
Backin' up the backups is getting to be a habit.
