Wack you with my WACOM!!!

Ban Me Please!
Hey everybody,

this should be of very little interest to just about everybody except for those that use Wacom tablets on their computers. You know who you are. :)

I've been using a 6x8 tablet for some time and after the initial weirdness I can't imagine doing any work without it. So, I get the bright idea to upgrade to a larger tablet since I have dual 24" monitors and my elbow was hurting from hunching over the small tablet. the 6x8 also isn't great for widescreen monitors.

I decided to order the 12x19... I was going for the 11x6, but my wife told me "bigger is better"...whatever that is supposed to mean, I don't know. So, I took the plunge and ordered. I even laid my ruler out to see how big it would be, but it seemed logical.

Well, the thing came in yesterday and IT'S FREAKIN' HUGE... and I love it. I had to reorganize my entire office, because it's so big, but it's worth it.

I don't know if you get a good sense of scale from the picture, but I laughed my ass off when I took it out of the box. It was almost like plunking a 64-track mixer down in the middle of my desk.

Anyway, if you guys don't use a tablet I would suggest trying it. You have to give it a week or two, but once you get used to it it's amazing.

that's it.

Later,

J.

I've got a 9x12, I've been thinking about going up to a Cintiq, but not sure how I will do dual screen and a cintiq.. maybe just upgrade to one 30"+ cintiq.. oh wait, I'm poor again...

i'm running a dual core pc box though hehe, but eventually i'll convert to mac pro

mine sat in the box for a few months also, but then I was cutting out some photoshop thing and decided to bust it out, ill never go back... though I still use a mouse for everyday stuffz.

I rock out my 9x12 everytime I open Photoshop. I honestly can't go back to the mouse.

That's great to see so many people using the tablets.

I can't however imagine having one sitting in a box for a few months SINK and TARIONYX. I pulled mine from the box and spent three days redoing my entire place around it. :)

I was going to go with the Cintiq...the wife even gave the thumbs up, but I just can't figure out how it would handle the whole dual monitor thing. My understanding is that it can't...so I opted out. I didn't even think about the single 30 and Cintiq combo.

I think i'll wait for a solid 40" monitor, then make the switch. :) Or maybe in a year or so we'll have a 30" Cintiq. That shouldn't be very expensive. :)

TC. I have just started using Photoshop and can't imagine using a mouse. I use my tablet for 3D sketchup models so I was ready when I started with Photoshop.

Hey SINK, it took me a bit, but I just realized that your avatar is from DELICATESSEN. That is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I had rented it from Netflix....it's still upstairs and today it came in from Amazon. It took sooooo long for it to come out on DVD.

Spielberg got me interested in movies and Jeunet and Caro have kept me interest and have even recently reminded me of what intrigues me about film

It is one of the few movies I can watch more than once or twice.. I liked it enough I actually bought the import DVD. Delicatessen and City of Lost Children are in my top five, probably Amelie too... it makes me want to go watch them just thinking about it!

I don't see how anyone can use a tablet. I've got one in my drawer that just sits. Tried it more than once, but it's such a pain in the butt. I just can't train myself. I've seen the artists where I work using them and they're pretty quick, but they aren't doing anything I couldn't do with a mouse.

Where's the advantage? Given, of course, one is proficient with one.

The advantages just depend on what you're using it for. In many cases a mouse is quicker.

I do 3d models of all the homes I design and using my modeling program accross two 24" screens is MUCH easier and faster than using the mouse. I still use the mouse for rotating in 3D space, etc. and the mouse get's used about 30% of the time for just about everything.

I would have carpal tunnel in no time trying to use my ball mouse to get my cursor across 40"+ of screen. I'm getting close to 40 years old and sitting at a desk using a mouse for 12 hours a day is starting to take it's toll. A tablet also helps relieve the finite movements that a mouse forces me to make and allows me to sit a bit more proper in my seat.

but don't think this is an argument for or against a mouse or tablet.

I use both and always will. I just wanted people to see how ridiculously big this thing is. Pretty amusing to me.

Tablets are nice for visual effects guys. It's rather nice to be able to dynamically control the feathering on a roto matte by using the pressure sensitivity of the tablet.

That said, I refuse to use a table for ordinary internet surfing etc. It takes too long - mouse is much faster.
