Am I the only person who is getting video noise in dark and shadow areas? Like i film a person wearing a black coat and its covered in noise. No matter what i set the gain to.

I actually wrote that before PIMP's "damn what happened" message appeared -- he just beat me I guess.

PIMP, I'm sorry for that message, I just couldn't resist. (c8

its cool i am just not techinically proficient.

I tried to attach a link with my post but it takes forever and it says that it was invalid. i tried to attach a quicktime file.

Anyways any advice to help me? Its like a bunch of noise in dark areas

Dark areas are where noise will appear. Noise is accentuated by lack of light.

Pressing down the blacks in post can help.

i really wish i can figure out how to attach clips so i can show you all. my actor is wearing a black coat and standing in front of a grey wall. It is as noisy as can be. And i used A LOT of light so it doesnt make sense. Specifically in the slight shdaow areas. Its like humming video noise

The HVX200 is noisy in dark areas. So are almost all the cheap HD cameras (save for maybe the Sony Z1 and FX1). To reduce the noise:

1. Over expose a bit. You actually get more than 100% out of your lighting. Barry suggests setting your high zebra at 105% (you actually get 110%) and expose as bright as possible. Then, you can darken the image in color correction. This helps A LOT.

2. Lower the master pedistal. It'll push the darker areas to pure black and will not only crush the noise but also make a more filmish image. I always use at least a -7 on my MP.

These two things are the best you can do and really help reduce noise. There are some other things but they may not give you the overall image quality you want.

3. Turn down the detail. Detail enhances the noise. It won't be as sharp but it'll look clean.

4. Turn up detail coring. This greatly helps reduce the noise caused by upping the detail. The downside is that sometimes it can blur real detail and not noise.

5. Don't use Cinelike-D. It has the most lattitude of the gamma settings but it's very noisy.

6. Don't use Cinelike color matrixes. I love them too but they are noisier. If the noise is really bad, consider using something else (though personally I'm just willing to deal with the noise at that point).

I just bought a FX01 today that is a small Panasonic picture camera with 28mm zoomlens. (a little beauty, with enough light or in low ISO setting it excels) Take a look at www.dpreview.com for reviews from any Panasonic camera. Noise is a trend here, its part of the deal. A way of 'image creating' and chroma noise is part of that thinking and the processor. You have to live with it.

If you take a look at the Manage Attachments dialog, you'll see that the only formats that are permitted are: bmp, gif, jpg, pdf, png, txt, xls, and zip. You cannot attach any video, you will have to put it somewhere on a server that is connected to the Internet, and provide a standard URL for the file.
