HVX and Air Travel

We've had a similar thread for a while but I'm interested if there are any updates.

Have any of you been compelled to check a camera rather than carry on board?

While I plan to use a Pelican 1510 for potential of upcoming international travel, I know that if I have to route through Heathrow, even the 1510 exceeds the limit (something like 35x45x15 cm).

Faced with the scary possibility of having to check an HVX, is the 1510 adequate or should I consider something like a Thermodyne or other heavier case?

Last weekend I checked a DVX because I was traveling into Heathrow. The camera was protected in a Pelican case and everything turned out ok. Given the choice, however, I always carry on.

Flew with an HVX three weeks ago. Carry on, no problem - but it was a Canadian domestic flight, your mileage may vary.

Regardless - as I stated in another thread, I see news people travelling very often, and the routine seems to be the same all the time: all gear like lights, tripods, monitors, gets checked, but the camera - that's a carry on. I've never seen anyone having trouble with that.

I'm flying to London in 2 weeks with HVX , laptop, drives etc in my carry on from US. No problem. Returning from Heathrow is a BIG problem.
Text below is from the Virgin Airlines website. United has same draconian restrictions. Maybe I can stick my powerbook in my waistband , but I don't think the camera will fit in that tiny briefcase.

Each passenger can carry ONE item of cabin baggage each. The dimensions of this item must not exceed: a maximum length of 45 cm, width of 35 cm and depth of 16 cm (17.7"x13.7"x6.2" approx) including wheels, handles, side pockets etc (this is roughly the size of a standard laptop bag or briefcase). Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. Passengers can carry within this piece of cabin baggage any personal items except prohibited items.

Round trip today:

Oakland, CA to Salt Lake City and back.

Soft case Porta Brace carried on. No problems.
The rest of the gear was checked in.

The only thing that was scrutinized at the checking point was my wireless back for handheld microphones!!! The woman asked what it was. After response she laughed and told me the screener at the x ray station thought it was a bottle!!!!!!

Weird times!

Ive taken the HVX to Las Vegas for VSDA and it is confirmed that the 1510 is carry on approved.

flew from heathrow to jfk last week. stuck my laptop and the hvx in a canvas messenger bag, carried it on with no problems. a 1510 might be allowed in the US, but it will not be allowed on at heathrow.

Plexi,
That's great news if I can fly w/HVX & laptop from Heathrow. Think I can throw in my P2 store and a couple HDD's too ?

I'm glad to hear that people are having success flying with the HVX and a laptop. I am flying to Germany in Novemeber, and I usually fly with the camera and laptop, and check everything else.

I have heard that www.airlines.org is a good place to check out what the restrictions are for each ariline - I haven't looked at it yet, but it is nice to hear that the real world experience is working out ok. I just do not trust those attendants to check my HVX- I just flew from Seattle, Wa to Portland, Or (50 min. flight) and they lost my wife's luggage ....

I did some domestic flying within the US over the last month. 8 flights on, Southwest, uniited and U.S. air. One flight was even on one of the small jets. On each of these I had a backpack with 17" laptop and harddrive and also a Setwear rolling gear bag, with HVX, P2 cards, etc. They both fit in the overhead lockers and I had no problems. I do have a Pelican 1620 that I nornally carry the camera in with mattebox attached and all the other accessories, like filters, batterry charger etc. etc. So I just take the camera out and check the pelican. The setwear bag was only $75 and I just added some foam to the inside to give the camera a bit of support.

Very interesting responses here and I'll check out the airlines.org site.

The real concern is Heathrow with its restriction of bag sizes.

This article on the BBC website says that the UK carry-on size restrictions are going to change to 22" x 17.5" x 9.85," which I think is big enough for the Pelican 1510. Although the article isn't entirely clear, I think they said the change will occur on Friday. This should be good news for anyone traveling through Heathrow soon.

It also says the size restrictions will be waived for large musical instruments. Maybe the same argument could be made for expensive cameras.

That's great news. I generally like to conenct through LHR simply because of the AA/BA alliance for points. Now all that needs to happen is to relax the ban on liquids so I can hit the shop in Duty Free that has all the great single malt Scotch's.

Ned

yep, just flew back to DC from Heathrow . Got my HVX, powerbook, p2 store, nebtek monitor and 1 HDD in my customary Tamrac rolling carry on .
And 2 bottles of Famous Grouse in my other hand from LHR duty free shop to ease the ride back in a middle seat.

Glad to hear that everything went smoothly- that gives me confidence for my November trip, thanks!

I'm all for a good single-malt ... Luftansa is great that way- free drinks while in the air- make the rip that much more enjoyable. :)

Just got back from 48 hours in the Arctic Circle of Canada. Pond Inlet, about 800 km northwest of the Nunavut provinces capital of Iqaluit.

I have a Pelican 1550 for my HVX, and a laptop bag with a couple of hard drives. I was able to carry on both sets on the 737 from Ottawa to Iqaluit, but on the smaller ATR's they forced me to check everything because they were using the overhead compartments to store cargo heading for the small Inuit hamlets. I wasn't worried about the HVX in the Pelican, more my laptop in a thinly padded leather bag! But luckily, First Air is pretty feather touch with their loading. So it all came out fine.

Free wine and Irish coffee's with them on the way back too! Nothing like 30,000 ft above fjords while sipping on Baileys!

I travel all over the world and carry on the HVX 200, P2 store and Mac Book Pro inside a Pelican case 1510 which fits in all the overhead areas, it has wheels and a handle for pulling. when I get to where I am going it transfer over all the contents of the 1510 into a 1610 that I check in....Jim

Well, I started a thread on this in August at the height of the troubles as I was flying to New Delhi India out of heathrow and was obviously worried.... it turned out O.K and I was able to take an HVX plus a 17" Mac laptop plus a 600gb lacie d2 as hand baggage. Since coming back the restrictions on size have been relaxed so I'm not in the slightest bit worried about taking it all again on a Virgin flight out of heathrow to Shanghai China in 2 weeks! I'll keep you posted!
Regards

Indy.....
