How long can a firewire chord be from HVX --> Macbook pro

Whats the maximum length a firewire chord can be from the HVX to a laptop? I know I say a post about this somewhere but I cant find it now. Also is the only difference between recording to a laptop and a P2 card the inability to record in a native mode, ie. can you record any frame rate to a laptop? Anyone know of a expresscard --> Firewire 800 adapter?

Officially, the maximum FW400 cable length is 4.5 meters without repeaters. You should be able to get away with somewhat longer cables, but they will not meet the electrical specs or timing requirements of the protocol.

You can't record NATIVE modes through DV because the camera doesn't send anything out of the DV port in NATIVE modes. That shouldn't be a big problem however, since you can drop the duplicate frames in post. DV Rack HD will also drop the frames automatically and never record them in the first place.

Other things like pre-recording, loop recording, and interval recording that P2 can do need to be emulated in software. Again, DV Rack HD can do that.

There's an ExpressCard Firewire 800 adapter here.

I can verify 45' running DVCPRO 100 when using three of these cables end to end from a desktop, haven't tried with a notebook...
