Oh oh, you're in trouble now!

Hey all,

So I ***** and moan about Edius, say I'm probably not going to buy it... and what do I do? I buy it! :)

Which is probably sad news for people here because it almost certainly means I'll be bitching and moaning some more :) I'll try to keep it to a minimum though.

Actually, I'm already glad I bought the package. The alternative of changing to Mac OS really didn't appeal to me - and I've always been slightly allergic to Premiere and Avid. Now that I've defragged my drive, I am getting real time with a 720p24 stream, and that's all I hoped for with my poor antiquated laptop (time to update).

So here is my first lil' question:

Is there a way to get the player/recorder window to snap to the precise resolution of the clip, so no up or downscaling is going on during playback? I'd imagine there might be a button for it somewhere but I don't see one.

Thanks, and feel free to call me an idiot for whinging and then buying Edius anyway :) Or maybe that makes me a genius. I don't know. I'm confused.

Here we go...

Answer's no. The monitor window would drive me crazy if it kept snapping to huge resolutions like 1280x720 or 1920x1080, heh.

Your laptop option might be overlay clone to a separate monitor, if your graphics hardware supports it.

Malcolm I feel your pain. When I first tried canopus I was whining about it too, but it sure has grown on me. I've been using the trial version of broadcast 3 and barry was right, it is fast. I don't want to tell everyone how good it is cause canopus won't give me any kind of price discount. Oh Bhiga, will you ever forgive me? (:

Thanks Brandon.
It would be annoying if the default behaviour of the windows was to snap to the res of a clip automatically.
However I think it would be obviously quite helpful for there to be a button to snap when we want to.

Thanks!
M.

PS Hey Scrappy: I feel Edius is going to grow on me too. I can't wait to get back to NZ so I can set up a decent editing system.
The speed of the app is impressive though, and I could, in a pinch, use my current laptop for this entire project. Wouldn't be fun though...

I have to second that- I went out and bought a 24" LCD so I'd have exactly 1920 pixels to show all that glorious HD content. It just somehow doesn't seem right to squish it just for the sake of a tiny border around the window.

Of course, we get spoiled because all the other NLE's I've played with did full-screen previews on a 2nd monitor ;)

But I gotta admit, none of them can do it with the speed and ease that Edius can. I consider my Vegas7 purchase possibly a bad decision now, might save up for Edius after all. All their hype about HDV editing wasn't all it was cracked up to be :(

Cheers all,

Dip

@Malcolm:
True, it'd be nice to have a "full-res" mode or something, or even some kind of "zoom" like how the newer cameras have focus assist. Just to check on individual pixels and such, because even if you have a real output monitor, sometimes it's hard to see those tiny pixels!

@Scrappy:
Don't tell too many people - you're educating your competition - get a running start first, then tell the others so you can be their mentor...
Honestly, there are still things that annoy me about EDIUS, but I think there will always be things that annoy me, it's more a matter of finding a way, or the tool, that does what we need to do the best and/or quickest.
I'm beginning to hate computers... They keep impeding me on mundane tasks...

Oh forgot... those of you in the US, sometimes we have .d...e....a...l.s... so it doesn't hurt to call the friendly salesfolk in our office.

welp. Mine is ordered, but I don't know if the order went through or not. I have a daily limit. I busted it on that day. That is the one that hasn't gone through. But I emailed the sales dept. and asked them to submit/resubmit.

I may have to wait a little longer but I will get it non-the-less :)

woo hoo

Thanks

Here's a wee question...
The user guide with the bizarrely translated tutorials describes how to apply a dissolve.
It says if you place the timeline cursor between two clips on the same track and then go Cntrl-P (or hit the appropriate button above the timeline), then a joining symbol will appear between the two clips, and you will have your dissolve.
This doesn't work: it doesn't do anything at all.

Applying the dissolve effect works well enough, with the two clips being on two separate tracks - 'a la Premiere' style. I'm just very curious as to why the way the tutorial tells you to do it doesn't work.

Also, when I registered the product at the canopus site, it said my 'warranty' would expire just three months after purchase... What does this mean? Will I not be able to download software updates for this version beyond that date?

Thanks!
M.

Oh... I was also a bit disappointed with the keying functionality in the YUV filter. The only spline option not greyed out is 'hold', which is really useless. I can't think of a situation where I'd want to snap from one YUV curve to another suddenly within a clip: the whole idea is to have a smoothly interpolated correction, otherwise keying is pretty pointless, no? Any idea whether there are plans to allow us to use spline interpolation between keys with this filter?

I like the feel of the package more and more - just going a little crazy over these obvious shortcomings... YUV is the most intuitive levels correction for me by far - pretty much the only way I am comfortable with... so it being handicapped in this way is a big setback for me.

Wierd, I just tried it again and it works now...
I have updated to 4.03, so maybe it was a problem with v4.00.

All is good :)

Just the YUV thing now :)

I think the transitions on the same track also has to do with having to trim your clips back a bit to allow space for the transition. Does that make sense? There is also a check box in your settings that aids in that somehow. I don't remember at all, though. I saw it on one of the Edius 3 tutorials on the Canopus website a couple of months back. Check it out, it might help you.
I just have been doing my transitions on seperate tracks. I like it that way, and it seems easier to fine tune them that way. At least, so far.

Jason

Hi Malcolm,

Software "warranties" in general are a bit fluffy, so it doesn't really mean anything at all. You'll be able to download updates and such indefinitely. Of course major version upgrades are paid-updates, but dot-releases in general are free and will be downloadable.

We don't "shut off" access to you after a certain period, and if it does happen, it's unintentional, at least in the current support structure.

Brandon

Hey, speaking of updates, the version I received is 4.02. I am going to update to 4.03, but I don't have net access on my editing comp yet. I have to get a wireless router. Anyways, is it possible to download it on a different computer, burn it and take it to my computer with EDIUS on it.

Jason

Just downloaded Edius ver 4.03 and what a pleasant surprise. It is nice to know there is another application out there ( sick and tired of Adobe). A little like the divorce I went through and met a really nice woman afterwards.

However, a simple thing like the Transition doesn't seem to work. If I drag the transition it works but not if I insert per instructions. There is a yellow and greem bar inserted however. Also I cannot find how to extend the length of the transition.

Are there good quality tutorials available?

Thanks

I think when you are doing transitions on the same track, you have to trim the two clips back, to allow room for you to extend your transition.
I mostly am just putting them on two tracks and putting the transition that way. It seems to be more easily fine tuned for me right now, until I start figuring more out about how Edius works. Try that, you may like it
