It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

The lighting is very impressive on this show. This past week's show, "Hundred Dollar Baby", had some really great lighting during the 'fight club' scenes.

They bought all their cameras and equipment from us... but they said they have ONE secret weapon: Warm Cards.

I kid you not, the producer flat out said, "The Warm Cards save our ass."

He says it's pretty much all they do with their DVX's.

Thought you might like to know.

Sorry, new at this, "Warm Cards"? Cost?

Warm Cards are a white balance system that is extremely overpriced.

I borrowed ours from work, brought them to Home Depot and matched them as close as I could to those take-home paint color sampler things. We got them laminated and they work just as good as an $80+ Warm Card system.

Is it possible for someone who has a warm card to post before and after pictures? I googled them and found some on company websites but would rather see someone's footage than something that could have been enhanced in post to make it look even better.

I own a set, but I dont use them all that often. For me, they usually warm up the image a little too much, so i end up balancing through 1/4 ctb. That being said, I really havent done much experimetning and I would LOVE to see some before and after shots.

We use our sets every day. The lanyard set is used most often for us on the river. But for our customers the minus green card is the lifesaver for us. But really, its just depends on where they are.

But there's absolutely nothing wrong with using gels either if it gives you the effect that you or your customer like and a 1/4 ctb definitely does a nice job when it the conitions or look calls for it.

As for Warmcards being overpriced, well thats relative to the buyer. Being where we were and what we were doing at the time we got ours -- dealing with a responsive and reliable vendor and getting them here on time with no hitches is always a plus. So $80-$90 was a small expense for the books/accounting for something that we use multiple times daily.

We give the warm cards and A+ here.

I own and use warm/cool cards on every shoot I do. It is a MAJOR factor in creating a look. IMHO it is really silly to call them overpriced. Could I make my own? Sure but after materials and MY TIME, it is cheaper to buy them. Funny how people who own a $3500 MSRP camera can whine about a $58 accessory!

"For the last time, we don't need any warm cards!"

According to the producers, they do NO post colorization. It truly is about good lighting and the WarmCards.

Think about how much time and money that saves a production of any scale!!!

I've been using a rosco swatch book and the white balance target for DVRack - but frankly the Warm cards would be a lot more consistent.

I love the look of Sunny - can anyone post more info on the lighting setup? Any operators / gaffers from the show out there?

Not really:

"According to Associate Producer Jeff Luini, in charge of postproduction, the DVX footage is transferred to Digi Beta and then a window burn is made of the DVX’s second audio track, where audible time code has been recorded; these become the master source reels. The off-line edit is performed on Avid Meridians utilizing Scriptor software. Online editing (video and audio) and color correction is done at Laser Pacific in Hollywood, with the online assembly edit done in the facility’s “Super” computer. A video assembled master is corrected in the DaVinci, and the assembled/mixed audio is laid back onto that. This color-corrected sweetened master is the source for all network deliverables."

Well, that makes a hell of a lot more sense, but it was a nice fantasy while it lasted that you could sneek something on air uncorrected (not that you really would want that)

Hell, a good DP looks even better with a good colorist.

Thanks for the correction McGee:dankk2:

Still - if you were pressed for time in post (news anyone?) those WarmCards would pay for themselves in about 15 seconds.

Are there any colorists out there that would like to comment on getting 'corrected' camera footage Vs 'uncorrected'?

Don't get me wrong, I have and use the warm cards all of the time.

It's just pretty rare that ANY show goes to air without SOME cc.

In this case they are using a Davinci, which is pretty high end.
