Name your 3 TOP film directors

Zemeckis (best at mixing story with seamless/non-showy visual effects)
Cameron (nobody crafts a blockbuster like Cameron)
Mann (the king of mixing sound and image)
Malick (the best unconventional filmmaker out there)

It is very rare that I like more than 2 films by any one filmmaker. Like all good artitsts, filmmakers want to grow, and that means not revisting the same thing over and over, but rather exploring new ground. Usually that is ground that doesn't interest me, at least not the same way their first film did. Take Atom Egoyan for example. The Sweet Hereafter was an amazingly well-written and well-directed film, one of my favorites in years. I made it a point to search out whatever Egoyan made from that point on. I have literally hated each and every movie he's made since then. How I can be so in love with one man's vision, and then complete hate it one movie later is something I cannot quite explain. But it happens a lot. Robert Altman is another example. I loved loved The Player. But every one of his other movies seems long, uncentered, and quite frankly, boring as hell. Why do I feel this way? Not quite sure.

Others:
Soderbergh is quickly falling down my list.
M. Night is an interesting director but a terrible terrible writer who worked his ass off on Sixth Sense to get it just right, and since has given us movies where he's written maybe 1/4 of the drafts as he did on Sense. Makes 'sense' that they suck. He should have made Life of Pi. I want to see him with someone else's material.
Cameron Crowe is on the downswing.
If Spielberg knew how to end a film, he'd be in my top 5.
Ridley Scott's pretty awesome.

stephen sommers
michael bay
chris columbus

but I think my favoutie is probably Uwe Boll.

and if anyone argues with me I'll see them in the ring.

it's been a year, since i posted my top three in here. hasn't changed much. as a flmmaker myself, i still find myself looking back at the works of the dardenne bros, lukas moodysson, bela tarr, kieslowski, tarkovsky, and bergman for insight and inspiration. so as an addendum, i've also added my top 3 most influential films.

1. breaking the waves (the only von trier film i like, is one of my favs)
2. lilya 4-ever
3. the son
