Some Fall Footage, and practicing of my DOF abilities

I was bored last week, and decided to try my focusing abilities ONLY using the LCD. which I find easy. I know a lot people say go the EVF but the screen is so small without a way to magnify and focus. So I went ahead and thought I would pratice with the LCD since it is bigger, and I just rock in and out till I feel it is at its sharpest. Of course not always 100%. But that will be for my feild montor. :)

I would love comments, but then again who doesnt:)

Kind of hard to tell how succsesful you are when you're giving us an image that's so small (smaller than the LCD I believe). One can't judge the focus of a 1920x1080 image from a 450x253 one. This is why the magnification and EVF are so essential.

SurJones, nice job.
David, I just stretched my quicktime window and it was quite nice.
I especially liked the wagon wheel and the pink whatchamacallit flowers, the detail was quite nice. Your dof was very good.

Oh I think the footage looked nice but stretching or not isn't going to change that we're trying to evaluate the focus of an image with 18 times as many pixels as what was posted. How about some 1080 stills?

Nice stuff.. a bit over exposed on the start.. but lookin sweet.. I liked the end with the smooth pan over the tree bark.. Very Pro lookin!

good looking footage!!

I think you should have gone with some ambient music for that scenery..

Later...

Thanks everyone. I shot in 720p/24pn, so you'll get only get 1080 if you uprez :)

I over exposed those a couple shots on purpost. It added something, or the shy would have Added a something which would have drawn the attention away from the viewer.

Music choice is one of those things I try not to be clique about. Like fireworks and clssical music. I shot this in about 20 mins in my front yard, and edit with a simple sequence, choicing music first.

I love my sticks and head. both Vinten, and the pans it produces are butter!

The flower is a dangerous flower. Beautiful, but it strangles the life out of anything it comes in contact with. Plant kingdom is a biiiiiatch. I am sure if your typical grandparent were to set up a lawn chair and take the nap they usually do, they will die as well :)

Also sorry about the 450x... whatever rez. but I dont get but 2gigs per month of traffic, and this forum eats that in a day. :) I am going to switch the video over to my buddy Justyn's server.

Nice.

Like it.

Actually I'll need shots sorta like that to make composites for an upcoming project. Nothing's like inspiration.

Thanks gunleik, If you need stock footage I got what ya seen.

I did my first time lapse last night. For my first one, not bad, but I next time. I did not know the moon moved that fast. Still 5+ seconds per clips, but I wanted something like 20 seconds on Timelapse..stupid moon. Then is was hard to get the moons textures, and still being able to see the clouds.

No one has colors like colorado :), even though I am from L.A. and prefer it better to Colorado, I like the colors in the autumn/fall.

Good eye for foliage. The colors are all pretty accurate, no white balance issues, smooth pans. Yes, a little blown out at the apex of the first shot into the sky/leaves, but who cares? You had some great scenery to work with and the HVX is just a total whore for that! Good job!

Thanks so much. to clearify I blew those out on purpose. Thanks again Justin and everyone else for your comments.

Thanks for the grabs Sur. Colors and everything looks great. A couple shots are a bit soft though. Why don't you like to use the EVF and focus assist on the LCD?

I guess I am used to looking at least 7" feild monitor. Compared to now, looking in a 1" EVF is extremely hard. Now, more pixels making sharper, but to me feels like looking down a water well at a 13" tv at the bottom, so much Dead space. On the view finders I used on the XL series cameras, It had a zoom block that allow you to move the picture closer without going out of focus. If I remember right. It might have been on some brodcast station cameras.....I use the EVF for exposure. my EVF is set to B/W, still learning how to expose b/w.

Now on to focus assist. I use that on both. becasue it zooms in I can see better detail in the EVF with the focus assist feature. But I still use the LCD and the focus assist and get almost 100%. 90% of the time, I am thinking about my next shot, before I hit record on the Shot I am doing.. A slight problem that I am weaning off of right now, and is working.

David: I think that is what your questions meant. "Why don't you like to use the EVF and focus assist on the LCD?" I am hoping you just miss placed your words.

SurJones,
The imagery looked good, and I could definitely pick up some DOF at work, and dynamic changes to DOF.
ONE QUESTION FOR YOU: What program did you use to encode your video? It looks pretty sharp, but I noticed it had a pretty low data rate of 780Kbits or so per second. Low rate for pretty sharp quality. So again, I was just wondering what program you used to encode the video in H.264, and what settings, if you don't mind sharing?

Looked very sharp, and I enjoyed the music as well.

I felt like you captured the beauty and detail along with the subtlties of nature all in one clip
