1080p vs. 1080PA

Greetings all,

I have a shoot tonight and finally going to shoot 1080 instead of my faithful and trusted 720 and I've had this darn cam since March.... Go FIGURE. Just wondering, in people's views and opinions.. on the advantages of the advanced 1080pa vs. the standard 24p footage. If there's really any at all.. or a personal choice? Looking forward to jumping onto this and recording time finally isn't an issue for this piece.

Thanks for any and all info. I'm shooting in 3 or 4 hours so thanks for any speedy prompt advice...

From what I understand, it's the exact same difference bewteen 24p and 24pA in 480i (and on the DVX100). It just determines the kind of pulldown. Good NLEs will extract either. I think Barry mentions some minor differences in his book but I forget what they are. Advance tends to be recommended though.

I never really understood/looked into pulldown but I gather in pal land their is no need right ?

Thanks Barry. BTW. I got your book in the mail yesterday. It looks awesome and I'll be reading it at the beach this weekend. I only hope I can get to meet you soon so I can get you to sign it.

I nominate Barry for HVX man of the YEAR! Thanks for the info and for the good reading ahead!

I'll post some clips from tonight as soon as I can clear off some space... HD does gobble up the HDs... THANKS ALL

Hi Justyn,

720 is where I love to hang out too, but I just tried that PA mode, and it was super. :)

Yes definitely PA. We had a large group shot from a lift inside a factory. I wanted just a little bit more res and getting that 24pa into my timeline for editing was just only an extra step it did help just a tiny bit with the faces. At least in the particular shot I was doing. :)

Here, here. I second that nomination for Barry. That book is already page worn and resides right in my left vest pocket!

PA in and by itself doesn't get you any more resolution -- you meant 1080 instead of 720, right?

There are two advantages to going with 1080 24p instead of 1080 24pA:

-Some programs are not able to remove advanced pulldown, and can only remove traditional 3:2 pulldown as found in tapes telecined from 24 frame film, which is the cadence that 1080p 24p creates. Make sure the programs you are using can remove advanced pulldown.

-1080 24p is considered to be a "smoother" cadence, so you would go with that for something that will be shown in 29.97 form. Any film originated show seen on TV will have this cadence, and DVD players output this cadence when they are playing 24 frame DVD's (such as any Hollywood movie) to a regular TV (when not set to progressive output). Also, you would probably use this cadence when mixing with 60 field material.

1080 24pA makes is very simple for an NLE to remove the pulldown frame: there is only one frame, and the other frames are whole and unmolested. The standard 3:2 pulldown spreads two frames over three frames, and it's impossible to just throw away bad frames and end up with the good 24 frames. Fields must be recombined, which means "processing" is required.

Some people like the 24pA cadence when viewed in 29.97, but it's not "standard".

Confusing enough?

24pA for posting in true 24p (after removing pulldown), 24p for posting in a 29.97 60 field environment (when not removing pulldown).

Thanks alll... The shoot went really well tonight. I should have something to show by the weekend. I did really love the 1080.... wish I had a monitor on set... viewing back through the LCD and things look really soft and like theres a diffusion filter on the cam or something.... but experience has told me that it's allright so I didn't freak out.... I also had some nail tack sharp focus... I hope and believe.. thanks to the focus assist and the viewfinder...

I was clear on the advantage of the PA until the last post. I'm lost again... lol

i use vegas..... i dont have to worry about these things...... VEgas just does it all for you.

Hi THoff. :)

Yes I definitely meant 1080. The PA was nice because I was able to do that conformity thing in FCP (forget the command at the moment) and Voila it was 24 frame and slid right in to what I was doing.

That's correct, there is no pulldown in the 1080/25p footage.

I'm not sure whats better not having to think about pulldown or an extra 10 fps in slowmo :nads:
