The Door Between - a story about life and death

Ok...a few updates...

a)finished with AfterEffects....FINALLY...there's nothing else to do...actually a pro would find tons of things to do but I dont have the strength or the time to carry on with this

b)am exporting right now an uncompressed avi to work the subtitles, I have a rough audio file embedded with the voices so that I can sync them

c)just listened to a rough version of the audio for a 2' sequence of the movie...GOD! my brother can do wonders....to those of you who will watch this one...keep one thing in mind...WE KEPT NO ACTUAL AUDIO FROM SHOOTING...EVERYTHING is done in my brother's studio!

that's all for now...long night ahead of me....

I'll keep updating for myself....seems like there is no one around to talk to....all of you are encoding and uploading...generally doing something that -dings ...too bad...you should do something that bangs ;-)....loll...my god I'm so kinky sometimes...

ANYWAY----> Subtitles are DONE! VFX is FINISHED! Sound.....erhm....ahm.....look A 3-HEADED MONKEY!!!!

Brothers don't shake hands, brothers gotta hug! Sweet dude! Can't wait to see it!

I just got back home after 2 days I spent (almost entirely) at work. Finally I had the time to watch the movie as a whole and with the speakers at the appropriate level.

WOW!

I understand that this movie is not the best. I understand that we are a long way from doing things as they should be done. I understand that we need to learn, need to focus more and play our cards right. I understand a lot of things...

However...

When the end credits rolled at the final song I almost burst into tears! Really! All the pain, the stress, the running up and down the streets to shoot, buy stuff, get together....All our fights over the phone, net and up close....All the good times we had...All the hours spent editing, writing the script....All the hours that my brother spent the past few days to do the sounds and the score...hours that I was sleeping and he was working (he finished monday morning at 6.30!!!!!!)...IT ALL CAME BACK TO ME!!! And I couldnt take it all at once....

I am without words. This has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was not the first movie we've made, Love is the most deceptive feeling was made in July...but I dont know...maybe it was the deadline, maybe all the hype in here, posting stuff, talking day after day about it, it was more complete of course as a project than our other little shorts so far....it is all very emotional for me right now....I dont know if I ll ever feel like this for another movie....this has been a blessing and you guys played a big part....you were always in my mind....

I wanna thank you all again...I dont think I ll ever stop. This forum, this COMMUNITY has been a great FRIEND for me. I wish you just keep on doing great things and sharing and talking.

I want to dedicate The Door Between to DVXUSERS. I Know it sucks but dont take it personally!! THink of it as an effort not as quality.

Thanx!!! Good night!!

John man, I have to fly to Greece to meet you! You sound like you could be my brother! (and I am half-Greek you know! NO FUNNY COMMENTS FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY!!! :) )

Seriously, congrats. Nice post!

Can't wait to experience that soundtrack!

thank you guys!!!! I hope and wish we all have a long and healthy (above all) life and keep on trashing or thrashing this forum and these fests....

it will only gonna get WILDER !!!

YUP! IT'S FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen it yet but judging by John's cheers and happy mood on the phone I can expect great things..... And I am sure that it deserved everything we did during the last few weeks.

I will post again when I see the finished result to give you my (biased) impressions. The only thing I can say is that we have come a long way since we started filming (June of 2005) and what will be the true satisfaction (of course, except working with my mates and my girl) is to see our end results improving. Getting better and better just inspires me more and want to try even harder next time aroung... ;)

I saw it. I am happy. I would like to thank my family, my girlfriend and my friends.... Oh no, that's from my speech... Honestly, I have a very good feeling about this movie. I feel that we have done everything possible to have the best result possible and we achieved that in most aspects. The thing that makes me so happy is that we have made very good progress during the last year and this shows in our movies. Of course, there is a long way to go but I am sure that we are on the right path and we have the knowledge to learn more and more things about life, the universe and everything... What will happen next? We have some ready scripts but, at first, we are going to start discussing our weaknesses and start working on them. And of course, have some fun and send "the door between" to some festivals... P/S: A big thanks to everybody here... I may be a "young" dvxuser (I don't even own my own camera :P) but I was really inspired by the overall creation mood here.

Crying once you see your project completed is good. Nice to see something
from start to finish and remember everything along the way.

Ah, now this is an interesting entry!!!

First of all, I loved the fact that it was subtitled. At least for me it gave a whole different level of weight to have the characters speaking Greek.

I also really liked all the innovative post work you did. Man, if I had this when I used to light up an occasional doobie ... whoa! You really play with the imagery and work it so you almost feel like its part slide-show and part live theatre.

Where on earth did you shoot the climactic scene between 'father' and son? That is just tooooo cool. Tell me how that is lit. Are those candles? How are you throwing the light on the wall, or is it indirect lighting from the location?

I thought the story arc was very nice but found myself a bit disappointed at the end. I thought the concept of the protaganist waiting for the sunrise was very good but you just sort of find yourself there without a sense of closure from the big battle that apparently just took place. I felt you could have developed the end a bit more and I was a little confused because I assumed it was a sunset until I caught the reference to dawn. I think if you re-cut the ending you'd have a very nice short here.

It was particularly cool how you worked the grain and noise into the look of the piece rather than hiding it or pretending it wasn't there. If you are going to up the gain on your camera this is a great way to deal with it by making it a production value in the finished version.

I think I'd lose the "scratched film" look for the early scenes. To me, it called attention to itself and sort of lessened the value of all the other post effects you were doing that were more visual and enigmatic as opposed to being such a specific effect linked to old film reels. Just didn't fit for me, but wasn't a huge distraction either.

I'm looking forward to seeing how other members view this little gem.
