Hello,

This is a trailer for the movie "Empty Chamber", by 21st Century 3D (www.21stcentury3d.com) and Black Powder Pictures (www.blackpowderpictures.com).

It was shot using a custom 3D camera which uses 2 Andromeda-equipped DVX100A's to obtain uncompressed 4:4:4 images with about 10.5 stops of dynamic range on each eye.

Please note that the clip contains two frames arranged vertically, corresponding to the right and left eye camera images. You can view the clip normally in 2D simply by playing it. If you wish to see it in 3D you can use a player such as this: http://www.3dtv.at/Downloads/Index_en.aspx

You can download the clip in WMV format from:

cool! Ima try to watch it in 3d, but the footage looks pretty good in 2d. Any behind the scenes photos? I'd like to see the setup.

Juan, every day I check the news forum and still no word on the andromeda deal for DVXusers. Any word on that?

Yes, the discount will be announced by the end of this week, so stay tuned! :)

To address some common questions about the footage, it was shot using Andromeda on the DVX100A(actually, two side-by-side: http://www.21stcentury3d.com) with NO anamorphic adapter in 4:4:4 Uncompressed 10-bit mode. The native frame size in this mode is 1540x784 but it was resized for 720P.

CORRECTION: The footage was shot in Uncompressed 4:4:4 8-bit mode at 1540x984 full frame, then resized and cropped for 720P.

Cheers,

You don't need 3D glasses, you can just view the clip normally as you would any other movie clip. It plays as a regular movie by default.

However if you do have 3D glasses(red/blue, shutter, etc) you can use the software listed above to see the 3D effect.

Hope this helps,
Juan@reel-stream.com

Any chance you could put the pictures side by side for a stereoscopic view? All you would have to do then is cross your eyes, no glasses or software needed.

I think the frames where arranged vertically so the clip would play with the 3D player I posted, but I may be wrong. If arranged horizontally it would also be difficult to fit it on most screens since it would measure 2560x720.

Just to clarify, this was shot in the 8 bit mode. 10 bit should look even better. Side by side at 2560x720 would exceed the maximum resolution windows media can do. The stereoscopic player lets you specify the over/under 3D format as well as the playback format. You can choose anaglyphic (red/blue) or other more advanced methods. There are pictures from the shoot and a 2D quicktime version on Blackpowder's site:

Very cool stuff! How is this going to be shown. Where can I see it?

That helicopter picture looks hella-cool. How'd you pull it off. Is that a real chopper or some digital magic?

Ok, I just tipped my Macbook Pro sideways and did the cross-eyed thing and it looked incredibly cool. Sideways, but it looked awesome.

Now I'm just going to go take some Tylenol, if you'll excuse me.

Mojo,

I ~think~ it's some digital magic. Although I have to admit, I can't tell just from looking at it.

Cheers,
Juan

Juan,

That camera looks f-ing sick man. I would love to take that thing for a spin. How did you decide on where to converge the planes? Are they perfectly parallel - I'd think that they'd either be variable or set to converge at a set distance?

As usual, you are doing some crazy cool stuff with the DVX. I'm glad to see the lump put to such good use.

The 3D camera was 21st Century 3D's work ("21c3d" posted above) and yes, i agree it is pretty amazing. 3D is not my area of expertise, 21c3d can probably answer your questions much better. I'm only responsible for the uncompressed image quality per each DVX :)

Cheers,
Juan

Hi,

The cameras are kept parallel at 2.75" separation to avoid image distortions and other 3D problems associated with converging cameras. Parallax values can be set in post via image offset.

Brilliant. We tested a similar configuration with Sony WSL cameras for stitched 360 presentations without success. That convergence nut is tough to crack. Keeping the images independent through post-production is clever. Damn clever.
