Tried and Failed

Well, I am so upset I could cry.

I have worked so hard on and overcome so many obstacles putting together my first film... and now it looks like I am going to fall to the OUTPUT PROCESS.

I have read and tried so many things to get my 5:59:29 long FCP project out as an H.264 in under 50MB. Obviously, I am doing something wrong because there are many who can do this.

And the final straw was putting my project through Compressor only to find that after an hour and a half of calmly waiting to see the output, it is nowhere to be found. (I guess I didn't set a destination and it is back in the source material and I have no idea where.)

I would revert to one of my early attempts using QT compressor (which look great at high MB and terrible at 50MB) but I have no lost contact with my computer! (It just gives me the spinning beachball of death... won't even shut off right now.)

IN FACT, I HAD TO GO FIRE UP MY PC THAT I HAVEN'T USED IN EONS!!!

I am very sad. I really wanted to show off my work. I was and am really proud of what I did. I just don't know what to do know. I feel like crawling up in a hole.

I am sorry I waited until the last minute. Yes, my fault there. But I wanted to submit the best possible work that I could and had no idea that the output process was so freakin' awful. (I mean, I burn DVD's all the time! I never thought that a streaming web file would kick my butt!)

Not much to say but I am sorry that I cannot participate. I was really looking forward to the feedback.

If there is an opportunity to have my film presented in any way, shape or form... please make a sticky or PM me. I plan in going under a rock for a while.

Ted,

Sorry to hear how things are turning out. I'm on a MAC as well and have been having some similar problems rendering out the streaming file and moreso getting it uploaded to the server; on my third try right now. I got the Compressor process down to a 'T' now so I might be able to help out with settings and such. If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll give you my cell. I'm going to be up for the next three or four hours at least. Maybe we can make this work.

In FCP, export using Quicktime Conversion> Quicktime Movie> H.264

Then set the audio to 22khz

Video to 400kbits per second

Not sure of size , was it HVX or DVX, if HVX then size is 400 x 225

Hi, was your original project in DV or Uncompressed? If DV you should not have any problem getting it under 50megs. I do 3 an 4min projects all the time in quicktime or wmv which is always little bigger. I've done a lot of h264 and they are smaller in size. My files usually run between 15 meg and 35 meg. Smaller for h264. You can do h264 from quicktime conversion or compressor. Some people say that it 's a different codec than when you use compressor. I'm not sure about that since they all use quicktime codecs. I'd try it in FCP using qt conversion to set up and run your output.

Good luck

Thanks all.

I now have my mac back up. That's a start.

As for my film...

I shot it in Squeeze mode, 24pa on a 100b. I am a little confused at Michael's question of my origial project in DV or Uncompressed. I assume uncompressed since, I load the captured video onto my harddrives and do all of my editing there.

All day today, when I wasn't at a job that I had to do, I have been trying different settings exporting using QT conversions. My very first attempt, yesterday - now 2 days ago - I used all of the best settings to see where I was at and I got a 180MB file. I then reduced the quality more and more until the image sucked and I was still in the 60mb range.

Then, 3 hours ago, I read a bunch of threads and info and decided to put this through compressor. Compressor took an hour and an half to complete and when it was done, I couldn't find the finished product.

When I did a "spotlight" search, I found that the sequence I was working on was in the project browser and seemingly as I had left it. A sequence of edits. No final output.

I will PM you Geoff and see if you have any suggestions.

Thank you all for your immediate concern and assistance.

Ted

Saved my butt!

Now, if Jarred will sleep in, I'll be golden!

Thanks again to all that pm'd and replied. Been a tough learning experience!!!

You MUST keep trying! I'm done but I can't seem to log onto the FTP site.

Maybe we could try a staggered upload for the rest of us?

Ted,

What'd you use to Upload? I'm using 'Fetch' and it's driving me nuts. I'm on my fourth upload; each time it transfers more than 150 MB and stalls. Any other mac users out there; what are you using for FTP trans?

Oh lord, one thing and then another....

Zip File? I used to have that on my PC.... is Stuff-it the same thing? Any one know?

:dankk2:

I am using Cyber Duck to upload.

I have tried for the last 5 hours and it was busy but I gave it one last try and now it is uploading!

I am now praying that it uploads successfully so I can finally sleep.

Thanks Cynic, I have Stuff-It. I am just wondering if Jarred will accept my stuff if I send it with Stuff-It.

I'm guessing yes.

If no, anyone chime in!

Do you have the Stuffit Compression software? Drop Stuff? It has a zip option as well.
