Skateboarding, 100b, xl2, 2100?

Anyone have a recomendation as to which of these three cameras (dvx100b, XL2, or vx2100) would be best for filming sports such as skateboarding?

Well... I'd cancel out the XL2 right away because of it's size. It's not very maneuverable and can be hard to see the viewfinder in strange positions.

If that's all you're going to be filming is sporting events and skateboarding and whatnot, then I'd go with the VX2100. I have NOT used the camera before, but have read a few positive reviews (like this one) and heard good things about it. Seems like just a good, overall solid camcorder.

And it's also cheaper.

rcbrown is right, the xl2 is just too big and awkward for overall skateboard shooting. If you were strictly a long lens shooter, I'd say maybe considering it has a 20x optical zoom. However for getting into corners on stairs and using it with a fisheye for filming lines is not very practical. Prior to the DVX coming out, anyone who had a serious interest in skateboard filming went with either a vx1000 with century death or a vx2000 with century death mark II. While people are still using those two cameras in addition to the vx2100 because of its improved low light capabilities, a lot of people are stepping up to the DVX series. The DVX offers of course great quality overall, great manual features including changing color matrixes and gamma, the 6 scene files, good low-light capabilities and 3 recording modes.
I had used the vx2000 for shooting skateboarding for about 4 years and it was a great camera and held up fine. But once I started getting out of shooting skating and more into narrative work, I opted for the DVX because of what it offered over the vx. So if your just looking for a camera to shoot skateboarding with and really nothing else, then the vx2100 is a good option for you and will save you money vs. the DVX. However if you plan on shooting other things such as short films, documentaries or whatever in addition to skateboarding and the DVX has what your looking for and meets your needs then thats definitly an option to look at.

Thanks for the input you guys! So lets say we disregard maeuverability (pretend they are all the same) and disregard price (pretend they are all the same)... Which do you think would then be best, considering I would also like to film other things as well? The appealing thing about the xl2 is the shoulder mount, and i do understand the dvx has a little better "film look." The 2100 would probably be good for skating, except its limited on cinemagraphic capabilities that i want to have fun with!

i suggest you go with the dvx100. i have filmed skateboarding with all 4 cameras.. vx1000, vx2000, vx2100, and the dvx. i prefer the dvx100 by far.

So why do you prefer the dvx100b over the vx2100? I'm guessing because of its picture quality and cinemagraphic capabilities>? But as far as night skating goes?

out of subject but is that daron malakians pic filmismymedium,im a huge huge fan of system of a down.

Get a hdv cam with 16:9... From the two, go for the dvx if you need the 25p for in-between clips between parts. The vx2000 is much easier to use. The dvx also suffers from nasty green vertical streaking when filming outdoors with fast shutter speeds.

One thing you need to take into consideration when shooting skating is that you are probably going to break your camera, especially if you have the death lens and have dudes grinding right over the top of the cam. That is why most of the skate shooters I know (who shoot DVDs) shoot on the GL2 or the VX. It's cheap to replace. that being said I know a bunch of guys that work on the Dew action sports tour and since they arent using thier own equipment, they use HVXs.

This is the first I have heard of the green streaking. I am considering this camera for outdoor filming of hunts...is this common with all DVX?

Yeah, I forgot that aspect. If you're filming skateboarding, get a used vx or gl, and check if you can get a used century optics fish-eye.

the fx7 or the dvx. i personally would go with the dvx because it seems more versatile than any other camera in its range

vx1, hands down

vx1, hands down

i shoot with a dvx for skateboarding, but my friend shoots with a vx1 and i love skateboarding videos with vx1 footage hands down, vx1's colors give it a more natural feel. i could say a **** load of good things about the dvx, but for skating if you want a natural feel use a vx1. skate more by dvs is a prime example, most of the footage in that video is vx1 and it looks ****ing great. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I shoot alot of extreme sport stuff with my dvx and its great but the only thing I don't like is I am too worried about my camera breaking because it was so expensive that I don't get some of the shots like I would have got with my old vx1 for fear of breaking my dvx..

I shoot BMX with a fully insured DVX and love it. I used a VX1000 for a long time before someone (Panny) finally made a camera worth ditching the VX1 for. I'd defintely recommend a DVX over a VX2*00 or an XL2.

definately go for dvx, i was in the same situation as you , i have used vx1, 2, 21 and dvx..

dvx just gives a different look all together..
