Is the HVX200 a Native 1080p24 Camera

Hi Guys,

Just wanted your thoughts on the question: Is the Panasonic HVX200 a native 1080p camera? I hear many discussions about the issue and have not found any conclusions to it. I am of the understanding that when recording in 720p it is native and is actually recording 720p. But when it comes to 1080p I have heard that it records in a 1080i stream and uses that strem to convert/record to 1080p. First of all is this true and if so does that show that it's not a native 1080p camera?

Your thoughts will be very much appreciated!

James

In the sense that you're using it, it's a native 1080p24 camera in exactly the same way the DVX is a native 480p24 camera.

All internal image processing is always done progressively, including in 1080 mode. However, the HVX200 is then forced to store the video in interlaced half-frames because there is no 1080p format.

Native 1080p can mean a lot of things. Does it mean it has native 1920x1080 chips? No but I don't know of any camera for under 100k that does. If you mean is it a true professive camera then yes. The HVX200 and HD100 use progressive CCDs for a true progressive image (though the HD100 can only output 720p). The XLH1 and Z1/FX1 use interlaced CCDs and blend the fields for progressive. This is what lead to the claim that the HVX200 was the only true 1080p camera for under 100k (though I guess now the HDX900 changes that).

This question has been answered some times...

All internal prosessing is done at 1080p @ 4:2:2. Then it outputs to the desired format.

The chips uses interpolation to get in the ballpark of 1080p resolution.

The codec gives you 1280 (US) or 1440 (europe) horisontal lines instead of 1920.
This is a codec restriction and not a camera limitation.

what is up with the TV makers advertising TV's as either 720P or 1080P? There is no 1080P yet on the airwaves, only 1080i...

Are you asking if there are redundant frames recorded in 1080p at 24 frames per second?

There are no 1080P channels yet in the US (I beleive there has been 1080p prgramming in Japan for a while now). There are however Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies that are in 1080p. Also, you can use your computer in a 1080p mode with a 1080p tv. The new Playstation 3 will be 1080p. So there you go. Thats why there is buzz.
