My Short Film

The site is really amazing...I'm not a shill or anything for them, but it's amazing how helpful it is to have all the festival info in once place rather than looking around for the info on different sites or in books...

They don't handle a lot of the bigger festivals like Sundance or Slamdance, but the upside is that it's all automated, so all you need to do is press a button and you're entered into the festival. The festival is notified and paid, all you need to do is print out the reciept and send it along with your movie to the festival...it's so much easier than having to fill out a new form for every festival and keep track of what's going where...

We've entered into 15 festivals so far with them and it's paid for itself already. Plus you can upload a digital press-kit so that the festivals can just download info, photos, synopsis, etc and you don't have to send it out to them.

And if you buy now...you'll get this free set of Ginsu knives!!!

Hey Christian,

Very impressive! I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Great work on the characters and congrats on the wonderful dynamics between the two guys 'talking'. Well done! Keep up the great work.

Sorry for this, but I just wanted to comment more as I just watched it again. I'm really impressed with the writing. This could have gotten really "jokey" when the two men are talking to each other, but you hit just the right note --- that's hard to do. Great job!

BTW, is the boyfriend another one of the Wilson boys (Luke, Owen). There are a couple of shots where he's the spittin' image of Owen. The girl is also really elegant --- and really good.

My ONLY gripe is that the audio level is extremely low. But that's an easy fix.

What exactly do you use this adapter for? What does it do? Sorry, but I am not familiar with such things...

A 35mm adapter is used to give you the same depth of field options you have with 35mm cameras --- particularly useful when you need really shallow depth of field (a shorter region in focus).

darwinandpaine: That's funny about the Wilson brother thing...no, he's not related, but he's from Texas, so maybe that has something to do with it...actually all three of the leads (Seth, Tessa & Ryan) went to Carnegie Mellon University together which is a big part of why they all worked together so well...they spent 4 years together acting, and had built up a lot of trust...it really makes all the difference.

And thanks for the compliments...I'm starting to get the ideas together for the next one and I think it's going to be more of a drama, not a comedy. At least that's what it is now, not sure how it'll end up...

I didn't notice the audio level being low when I played it back on my system, has anyone else had this issue? If so, I'm sorry, I didn't know...my original mix has great audio, so maybe something happened in the compression.

Your film was very nice. I thought the acting was strong, the story was sound. More than I can say for a lot on this site.

Tell me - did you do a film out for the festivals? I am curious about format choices for my short film. Anything you could share would be cool.

Also - what was the resolution you used again?

its a miconception that you cannot show brands in your films - any and all brands can be shown if used as intended.
The Duke law school put out an informative piece about copyright, trademark etc. for filmmakers called "Bound by Law". It's in a comic-book format, of all things, but it has real information. You can read it online or buy the hardcopy from Amazon. http://www.law.duke.edu/cspd/comics/

Dr. Jeep - We have not done a film-out for festivals yet, though it is something that we're looking at doing. So far, the festivals that we've got into are just asking for BetaSP or DigiBeta tapes...a couple want it on HDCAM, but so far we haven't needed it.

I think if we get into Sundance or even SXSW, then we might splash out and do it...but the cost is going to be somewhere around $3500 for a 35mm film-out and I'm not really up for spending the money yet. Especially since we're looking to shoot another short after the first of the year and I'd rather spend the money on that.

And we shot 720/24pn and then uprezzed in After Effects for the 1080p HDCAM output.

Do the BetaSP and Digibetas project nicely? How was the quality of the uprezzing from 720?

I am new to shooting HD - so forgive the remedial nature of the questions.

No problem...the BetaSP is okay, the DigiBeta looks a lot better. One festival that it screened at played the short off of a DVD and that hurt...

The uprez to 1080p looks great...I saw it on a big Sony HD production monitor as it was being put to tape and it was beautiful. Even the text in the opening/closing credits still looked sharp. I just love HD...

trying to download it but it breaks off halfway. speed is fast enough though

but i'll get there :D

Not sure why this is happening...I tried to dl it myself and got the same thing. Maybe I should re upload the file or something. Sorry about this...

I've been trying to download this for the past two days; it keeps quitting around 140 MB and acts like it's done downloading and then the file of course is incomplete and doesn't open. Still trying though...I really want to see this as the reviews have been great so far.
