3 TB of Data on a Standard CD

Plextor better take note of this!

This could be huge for the entire industry. If done right, tests and benchmarks would need to prove the longivity of the data that is burned on these 3tb disks.

I hope by next year we see just a 1TB disk of some sort.

Wow! I wonder how long it will be to market? Maybe a new Mac Pro in 2007 with a Super-duper drive? Can you say one-button backup? And I guess this answers the "what would we watch UHDTV movies on" question? Heck, I'd even ditch the iPod and go back to a cd-style walkman with 750,000 songs (though there probably aren't that many good songs in the world).

I'd keep my walkman. A CD and walkman doesn't store your video and photos and display them the same way, won't store your notes, contact info, calendar, all of which I use on my iPod daily. Music is the least of my iPod uses.

It's intriguing technology, but whether it succeeds is a whole different matter. Unless at least a couple of the big players license and adopt this, it won't be going anywhere.

Just having a better mousetrap doesn't mean squat if all the electronics manufacturers are pushing either BluRay or HD DVD. They want technology that they have control over, with built-in DRM, region coding etc.

Folks it would take only one company to market this and I will be jumping on the band wagon. Archiving for your HVX will not be a problem but think about companies backing up data on single CD is mind boggling. I think this is technology that cannot and will not be ignored.

As it is, it simply won't work with existing CD media:
"This spot maintains its size to about 10 nanometers away from the antenna before it starts to spread out."
The protective polycarbonate layer over the dye is far thicker than this, so there is no way that the beam can focus on the dye used to encode the data before it begins to spread out.
