Sketch Comedy sketch- DIARY - ECT show pilot

Greetings all,

Just wanted to share one of the first sketches that I've shot for my upcoming Sketch Comedy show, Electric Cow Theater. Features a talent comic here in town, Josh West. Shot over a couple of hours down by a tranquil lake. 720p with color correction. It's not completed totally. I still have to do a VO for the opening shot and the closing one.. as well as come up with some cheesy text for the opener. Got a lot of things in this that I normally hate... but work well for this, like a page peel. Yikes.

Overall it turned out pretty well and love the ability to really do some CC. I appreciate all feedback and there will be a lot... lot more to come. I just wanted to share this first with the bros at dvxuser.

Thanks and let me know what you think. Some of the material might be a bit objectionable and possibly offensive.... Not in language but in content. Other stuff forthcoming will be a lot more extreme.... Just a little something from his diary here:

Please download/ Save as (right click and all that) (23 megs, 2:30 Quicktime 7)

All I can say is HAHAHAHAH that was soo freakin funny. That guy held it together good. The lighting was just so beautiful. WOW! I am jealous. Did you use the same set up for your famous booty shot?

Reminds me of a MAd Tv skit, or that SNL clip called True Love, or something, Where the 2 fat people are walking into the sunset and they say this funny monologue.

Pretty much. Just cheap silver sided insulation from Home Depot... Better than bringing out an HMI as long as there is some sun.

This was pretty much his audition piece that he did to become a part of the cast. I've got a big couple of shooting days next week with these guys.

Thanks... and let's put up some of your stuff P.

That's some pretty funny stuff. I like the look. Very nice. This show is going to be great, everyone this is probably only a taste of things to come. Great work Justyn, everything looked great. See you soon.

true.... Got 60 sketches slated to shoot over the next 3 or 4 months... Keeping it really simple and enjoyable..... shoot in a few hours, edit in a couple of days and it's a wrap. Tired of extended feature projects and all of the hardships of making a serious feature.... Time to just have some fun and make people laugh. The next couple of shoot days should be really interesting...

BTW, the difussion and overall softness and all that were added through the Nattress film look plug in. For a hundred bucks, its really a great set of plug-ins and I use them quite a bit. More so on DV footage, but it handled the HD quite well....

about CC, it's good but not perfect. Parts of his face are tool blown out, too much concentration of light in one part, I laughed though, hope that's what you wanted me to say....

good job.

Pretty much.... I didn't want to overproduce this thing.. and make it look like something off early morning TV.

I also do have somemore work to do on the CC... and haven't gone through it all.. It's passable and that's kind of what I like about it as well.. Making people laugh is the ultimate though.. and I'm treating this like my hobby and like something fun. Short little pieces strung together with a bit of a plot for the show and that's it..

Thanks. The next few pieces will be quite a bit different...

HAHAHAHAHA!! Funny stuff Justyn!! Looks nice.. how did you get that bird to stay :-) did you use an adapter? A smidge hot on his face (not sure what u have ur zebras set at, but 85% is a golden/safe number to keep everything in the broadcast safe range, blow it out in post).. Otherwise SWEEEEET! Cant wait to see some more.. Hey, can I have brittany's panties?

Justin.... The bird is kept close by my ESP mind powers... Didn't use an apapter.. stock. It is a bit hot but I kind of like that lava glow edges to things. I think I have my zebras set at 105 actually... I'd be more prone to play it a bit safer for clients and that... but for this, it's part of the piece.. or atleast thats my rationale... disclaimer

I think that half of America may already have them.... but sure... Now Paris Hilton's... they litter the highways like wild flowers... Or atleast, so I've been told.

Still trying to figure out a darn title for these sketches. Got another one planned in a couple of weeks too. Any title ideas? The writer was just going with dear diary or something like that. I'm sure he'll figure something out.

Thanks

That was really funny. It felt a lot like Deep Thoughts from old school SNL. Maybe that's what the earlier poster was referring to. In any case, I laughed. And I LOVED the page peel bs. Throw in some star wipes while you're at it. Just amp up the cheese as much as you can.

Hey pal!

Nice to see you getting the ball rolling. Here is my feedback and comment:

When he put the pen in his mouth for the first time it reminded me of Dr. Evil.
I'd brighten the whites of his eyes some?
His voice reminded me of Finch from American Pie, not a bad thing.
Very good sketch comedy dialogue! BUT I think it needs some type of closure. I wasn't feeling it when it ended with the sausages.

I would start it off with Dear "God" and then end it with dear "Father so and so" (or the other way around). This way you begin and end with religion giving it more of that Sunday morning feeling you're looking for.

The fat girls one was a riot. That comedian is right off the set of In Living Color. Good pick with him.

I co-starred in Orlando Blues in Florida. Justyn was the man on the set there, he knows his stuff and I'm glad to know anyone with his caliber of expertise and creative skills. Okay... I'm done tenderizing your a#s hole now. Good job, brother.

Thanks all...

Bluetuned... that's a great idea about the star wipes... THANKS. I was thinking of doing something for the final edit and this might be it... Got a bunch of cheesy transitiions at my disposal...

Shamrock... That's also a good idea with switching the opening and ending bits... Might have something there with that... Still in the playing around mode with this. Theres going to be some more opening VO.. some text and other things to go over it. I personally love ending on something as stupid as the sausages though.... Guess it's a subjective thing! I will be doing somemore work on the exposure and that. Good point about the eyes.... Thanks for the props about the Orlando shoot. I wonder what's gonna happen with that thing.

Tonytwo-times... Man that's a great name. Is that an homage to that character in Goodfellas... He deserved an Oscar for his performance in that flick... As far as the show, I'm going to be shooting all of these ideas that are rattling around in my head... and then develop atleast a pilot.. or possibly a few episodes. Then try and create a buzz online (youtube, my website, etc) and then take it out to LA, NYC and a couple of the pilot/ TV markets. I've got a few friends in the biz who might be able to kick down some comedy doors...

I'm just really having a lot of fun with the cast of comics and actors I've assembled and shooting things as they come up. Not taking it too seriously.. or expecting it to be the biggest hit and monster out there.. I made that mistake with my first feature and went into huge debt pulling it off.. so I'm being conservative on the money I'm spending on it.. and also in it's possible place and all that. My ultimate goal would be to get it on a network, of course, or possibly just as a cult type of thing online where I'd be able to make some DVDs and spread the love....

This show was the real reason I bought the HVX... so it's just about getting off my booty and shooting some stuff that makes me laugh....

Thanks all...

Christian... Thanks so much.. Means a lot as your short was awesome. Thanks again! I'll have a ton more stuff coming. Got 3 sketches going down next week... Just having fun at this is so rewarding....
