ROUGH TRAILER: "Nemesis 305"

I really like the shots dude.. Just wondering, want microphones did you use for on field voice recording? Were they directly connected to the HVX, or separate audio equipment?
Keep up the good work!!

Hmm.. I wish I could help you here.. I really have no idea! We had a professional sound guy.. What I can tell you is that he went from his mic's to his mixer, then out to the HVX.. Thats about all I know..

Thanks for the kudo's..

yea, I mispoke...i was just thinking in terms of it as an "effect" which its not.....lack of DOF would be correct.

I'm in BOLD and Italic below..

I hate to sound harsh, but I personally found a lot of the Cinematography to be unmotivated. It's not about DoF or lenses, it's about placement and composition. Often times it felt like the camera was handheld in a static scene, contrasting the energy of the performance, and often times it felt like the angles and compositions chosen hand no real though or plan behind them. As if it was just the easiest place to put the camera. As a result, you had some high and low angles that created an awkward character dynamic. The DoF really didn't contribute because it feels like it was there technically, not artistically. While you had the lenses and equipment, I just feel like the shot plans weren't that well though out.

Not harsh at all.. But remember this is not the movie, we're not showing you every shot of every scene, so its a bit hard to show the motivation of a scene without showing the whole scene.. Most trailers you see are completely out of context, changing audio to other scenes..

As for thought time in planning shots.. You can always use more time.. But that luxary doesn't present itself at all on a low budget, small crew film..

As far as handheld in a static scene.. It wasn't static, it was handheld.. So if you felt that it was handheld, well, your correct.. :)
Both myself and the director like the movement, we like to have the audience feel as though they are there with the characters..

We're quite confident that the film itself will come together in a pleasing "artistic" non cookie cutter "original" piece of work that people will enjoy..

However, I will compliment the lighting, I think you hit that one on the head, at least from what I saw, creating a hot environment that fits the story and works well with the actors skin tones.

Overall, to me, it seems (and this is just my opinion) like this was a film that needed more dolly work, smoother shots (think "scarface") and some more complex wider work. I would like to see the lead challenged by his environment. I want to see the world he came from and the world he is struggling to get to.

From what I gathered, there are a lot of strong performances, and then some not so strong ones. I'd like to give a shout out to the guy with the high hair standing in front of the skyline, he seemed the most natural, and I wanted to hear his speech to completion, it pulled me in. The white guys persuading the lead to be a killer rapper, I don't know, I had a hard time swallowing that premise... maybe it's story, maybe its that that performer wasn't as convincing.

But hey, what do I know. I'm just a guy doing my thing. And I am often in the minority with my tastes!

What's your "thing" if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you for your commets and suggestions..

Justin- Very nice. If the rest of your footage looks like this you have little to worry about. The sound was good so was the choice of music.

I would go see this movie right now . . . however, I have to agree with bgundu, Peter, and HappyGobo. I would suggest that, if you must, have this long cut available for special friends but not general audiences . . . pull it now and make your teaser (trailer), and make it really good.

Even if you have to put a hold on editing the feature to do a proper trailer I would bet you will thank yourself come time to accept pre-orders.

Best.

Looks great. Way too long. It seems to me you have some VERY powerful scenes in this movie, use them, cut out the rest. I'm positive you could make a trailer from even just the footage that I saw to make this look like an oscar worthy film. Add a BLAM! sound effect when that one guy punches the other. I'd cut all the flash back out.

Start it off with maybe a few clips of Nate WRITING songs, maybe him gazing at a photo of his father blowing into a sax. "You a writer, you ain't no rapper."

What if your dreams... "The 305 right now, you holding it down. But I gotta ask you one question.... Are you ready for the fame?" BLAM! slam right into the life, show us how the simple writer went big time and the **** that was thrown at him once he got there.

Great looking film. You should be proud. Keep working on that trailer, making it shorter, more powerful. Good luck. Oh yeah... nice lighting in your shots.

Heu man dropped you a PM but thought i would toss out my spare change here. I understand what Happy Gobo was trying to say and I have to agree..

Yes it is good for showing us here and obviously we all love to voive out humble opinions which hopefully come across as helpful constructive criticisim, but I too would be very VERY hesitant to show any perspective distributors, invstors, ect this trailer.

The reality is those people always push to see something especially if they think there might be others wanting to see it. They will even say things like, "Let me see a rough cut... Oh I know its not finished and there alot left to o, but I am in the movie business I understand those things and I will take into account the fact that they are rough cuts.." but the reality is, they wont. Perhaps can't is more appropriate but regardless it comes down to they just don't know how to see it through creative eyes. Atleast 99% of the time that is the case. I mean lets face it, if they were creative geniuses themselves they would be making their ownn movies.

If you have have HAVE to show them something rough best venue is in the editing bay on your system, it helps maintain the "work in progress" feel. Otherwise if their really are people asking to see soemthing, I suggest halting the editinbg of the movie and concentrating on a serious trailer..

Those who are truly interested seem to stay that way. Our film is finally being completed after almost three years from when we began, and 2 years ago seveal major distributours were interested after seeing a pro looking trailer we cut togethere.. we are almost comppleted now at will be at AFM, and those distrbutors are still calling regularly. They will finally get a chance to see the finished product and make a bid, at AFM with everyone else.

In closing, good work and good luck.. Gotta support those Miami movies.
