Serious Magic Announces the DVCProHD Decoder for Sony® Vegas® and Adobe® Premiere®

It specifically does NOT require twice the disk space. That's the whole point of why he did it. The proxy AVI takes up very little space, and he references the original MXF instead of duplicating its contents.

Twice may be an overstatement, but "very little" is also one.

I'm looking right now at an example item I converted from MXF to AVI using Raymaker:

Original MXF: 3,071,283 KB
New AVI: 1,764,961 KB

So we're adding another 1.7gb on top of the original 3,07gb, along with the location dependency. I don't know what he's duplicating or not duplicating, but there's 1.7gb of it in there.

Well, you are correct, it does take up a lot more than I thought it did. I thought it only took into account the proxy file, but it still means a 50% increase; I just raylight'ed a 2gb MXF file and the new .avi takes up just over 1gb.

Just to be complete here, I ran the 3,071,283 KB file through Serious Magic and ended up with a 3,116,006 KB file. I don't like the increase in size, but it's portable, so I'm fine.

I wish I was Barry. I'd be 100x cooler than I am right now.

As mentioned in my previous letter, I am not going to sacrifice 20 percent of my recording time to work with your silly converter as it stands. My documentary shoots all this year and next. If I'm interviewing, say, the guy who wrote the Choose Your Own Adventure series of books, and I'm basically the only person who's ever interviewed him on video, then I'm not going to throw away up to a half hour of storage because a program told me it was too much to handle. So no.

Your program comes with no documentation. I'm sure you engineers are so proud of your program that it's obvious how to use it and so it doesn't need documentation, but it does. I take a P2 card's contents, throw it through your sausage factory and it comes out bozo. Write up something with just a few hints to make it not Bozo. $200 deserves more than what came.

If you were Barry you would never express yourself like that.

It really is possible to express concern, share information, or make a point without trash talking people . . . you should give it a try or maybe, just take a breath?

I phrase my messages to address the parties involved.

Barry, a talented and remarkably informed videographer, shares his time quite charitably, providing information that is vitally needed and selling a book that he could easily go "just buy my book" and leave at that, but instead never hesistates to fill the screen with pure, uncut knowledge that leaves us all the better for it.

Companies, however, who have chosen to wedge themselves in between two very large firms (Panasonic and Sony, Panasonic and Apple, etc.), and who expect hundreds (or thousands) of dollars from consumers for the use of their tools, are treated entirely differently by me. I cancelled my order of a Citidisk HD from Procon and made it clear I didn't want one and they STILL sent me one and charged me a grand for it. The process of getting it back to them and ensuring they would accept it, and get the appropriate chargeback, was not unlike playing a game of Milton Bradley's "Operation".

Similarly, we have this application set, converters, whose simple job (in terms of description) is to take the .MXF files out of a P2 and turn then into a form that can be ingested by a number of NLEs, notably Vegas in terms of my interest. To do this service, they both charge about $200 for the program.

In both cases, they have whacky aspects that, to me and my needs (hence my laying out of them) make them bothersome to use. One isn't very portable, and the other can't handle one of the core functions/advantages of the camera's output. There are workarounds; there are always workarounds. But $200 shouldn't buy you something that sort of works and then you get to wire it additionally yourself.

When something is good, it gets praise, but when it isn't and I paid good money for it, I don't soften the blow with diplomatic begging. They're businesses. They can handle it.

Maybe off topic, sorry. if i am recording with the hvx, should i put the DV rack IRE level to 0 or 7.5. I am doing film out. Barry i got your book, but maybe you could elaborate.
