2:3:5 mask in Avid XPress Pro HD.

I have a 1:85 mask and 16:9 mask... but I would like to get a 2:3:5 mask. Is there one available, or do you have the mask settings for 2:3:5? Thanks :thumbsup:

Hey,
how would you export a clip as 2.35:1? because if you exported it with standard widescreen settings in avid, you would still see the black bars from the matte no?
let me know,
thanks!

Stretch the image vertically 133% using the resize effect, or third party effect of your choosing. Then the image will look stretched vertically in Avid, then once you encode it to whatever format you can flag it as anamorphic and be good to go.

You can also export it clean out of Avid and use crop and stetch filters in your encoding software ... assuming that you encoding software has such filters.

EDIT TO ADD: You ARE losing resolution with this process. That's just part of the trade off for not shooting the footage anamorphic.

excellent, i will try that! so you wouldn't export the video from avid with the mask layered on top of the video then?
also, when you shoot knowing your going to export as anamorphic, how does your workflow while shooting change? would you shoot in 16x9 or 4x3? what would yeild the best results?

You would still need the masked layer underneath the resize layer because anamorphic is set up for 16:9. 2.35:1 is slightly wider, so you'll have some black bars even on an anamorphic file for 2.35:1.

You would need to shoot in 16:9 on the camera to achieve anamorphic prior to post, but the way the DVX handles this you still end up losing resolution unless you shoot with the anamorphic adapter. There's no real way to achieve 2.35:1 with the DVX other than doing the mask and stretch in post.

It's part of the MPEG-2 encoding process. It's different for every piece of encoding software, but somewhere there should be an option for specifying Anamorphic or 16:9 or something like that.
