Green Colour and HVX200's response

Hello,
I keep watching and comparing the HVX200 footages with DVX100 footages. Especiallly how both of them work with Adaptors (well, quite frankly I havn't managed to find too many footages shot with HVX200 with adapters like Guerilla35 or Letus35)

But there is this nagging thing that keeps comming back about the HVX200: the GREEN !!!. I mean, it is just me or did any of you notice it as well that HVX200 responds to Green colour (like grass or trea leaves) in a very funny way... In comparrisson DVX100 seems to be fine with it and with proper adaptors and lenses produces "cinematic" images that can compare to cinema of 1990s (Reservoir Dogs, Naural Born Kilers, Pulp Fiction)- Beautiful.

But HVX's response to Green is just funny. It looks too bright and unnatural... even unpleasant to watch.

What do you think?

I would suggest more camera tests. We recently shot alot outdoors in green grass overlooking Lake Michigan. The camera wowed us and the client with its color space(and there was alot of green in it) and latitude.

You can adjust the green in several ways; overall chroma level, chroma phase, and selecting the color matrix. If you don't like what you're seeing, just adjust it! :)

Wow! You mean I can adjust the look of the image with this camera? That's cool!:)

Green Colour.. continued

Green Colour.. continued

Thanks for these...

I don't meen the Green colour in my movies (in fact, I don't have an HVX.. only hoping to get one in December... for now just researching and learning)

What I mean is that when I watch people's footages... compared to DVX100 or FX1... HVX200 has a very funny response to the Green colour... they are all very nice and crisp and HD, but the moment that there is a bit of green in the frame...its immediately in your face... and it just screems: VIDEO!!! not CINEMA!!!

do you see what I mean..... just put together some footages from DVX100 and FX1 on one hand and next to it HVX200 footages on the other hand... and you'll see what I mean.

Well I can't say that I have seen the same thing. Has to be the stuff you are looking at, because the stuff I am seeing is nothing short of goreous and it is not greeenish at all. I have been showing as part of my demo kit a 4 minute reel from MotionZone, the stock footage place for HD and every clip is stunning. Some of the pieces are shot by some of the very same folks that post here, like Evin Grant. This 4 minute clip tends to stop most in their tracks, people can't believe that the footage was shot with the HVX.

Best,

Jan

Maybe it's your eyes ?
I mean it friendly...

Because, I've seen a lot of stuff and didn't noticed that. The thing that I can say is color are more ... More. Maybe you're not used to 4.2.2 codec and accurate colors... especcially green which is not nice in video.

Kronstadt,
I guess you are not refering to clips that have been graded in post?
Only straight off camera clips?
Otherwise you can´t really judge the color rendition...

BTW, I always had troubles with shooting in spring where I live, the gras just looked like a chromakey color, on the opposite everything I´ve seen that was shot in California on a bright sunny day just looked plain good.
I know this problem from film, but why it is there in video, I´m not sure.

The HVX has a cooler white balance than the DVX when you use 5600K preset.

But if you white balance, it will look as warm as the DVX.

Plus, it has a MUCH better color rendition. Cleaner, more defined.

The improvement is not subtle.

what i usually do in post .. when i dont like the green i bring down the shadow red gamma slightly and it enhances nicely the gree.. Dont get me wrong, I dont reduce the whole red of the video, just the shadow red gamma. If you try to just turn up the green or turn down red with a simple color adjuster.. u usually get a bad color cast over the whole video.. maybe that is what u are seeing in those other videos.

Video loves green, it is the cleanest color. Also remember, there is some pixel-shifting, etc. going on. The HVX handles greens better than the DVX IMHO and as noted the camera is infinitely adjustable. You can lower the color temp, move the color phase toward red, etc. Your comments seem to be more of a personal opinion, with that I cannot argue but I can tell you the HVX handles green very well.

ash =o)

Hummm,
I have had situations shot outside in bright sunlight where the green looked unnatural, and almost florescent.

I can't remember what was done, but it would be helpful if others would post their favorite "nature-outdoor settings".

Chroma down sounds like the first thing to do.
