Forever War (Short Film)

Keep on rockin' 599. I like your' fighting spirit. Looking forward to seeing those new shorts of yours'. On my own wish list from you would be some sweet timelapses from that hvx you own. It's true it's a little more expensive of a camera to be sitting around with, and there's no way it can compete with your DSLR, but after all, this is an hvx forum. Your' previous claim to fame hd timelapses proove what a good eye you have. It would be nice from the hvx timelapse crew point of view to see you contributing some marerial that sees you coming down to our own platform (hvx timelapses. I'm a little bit of a skater, street artist, photographer, videographe painter myself. I can relate to your' gritty side. I'm in montreal, but if I did see you on the streets of Burbanks i would probably hold my hvx a little tighter.

The problem with using the HVX to do timelapse with is that it doesn't pickup as much light as my 20D does. But in my next short I might try and find a shot at the end where I can use it for that function.

I think some people get why they weren't hitting each other when they were at a distance where it would be impossible to miss.

Nice work, Drew. Despite being a quick production - it looks great and has nice pacing and action editing. One note - when I first watched it I did not realize I had my speakers turned off, and I actually really liked it with no music at the beginning. You might want to consider a minimalist approach to the music, at least at the beginning - maybe a drone that fades in and builds to a fuller orchestration as the action hits. The visuals are so strong at the beginning, silence might showcase them more. Also I think your quote at the end should be more cryptic..how about:

He who lives by fighting with an enemy has an interest in the preservation of the enemys' life.

- Neitzsche

Also, congrats on starting a thread that has sparked discussions/arguments touching on everything from firearm safety to the philosophy of film criticism. Great thread. Finally, here is a short thought-provoking film that examines some of the philosophical questions that 'Forever War' brings up..

Cheers.

Pmgmedia, I liked your notes about the music in the beginning. Plus that "Saving Private Ryan" soundtrack is a little too identifiable. No one has said anything about the track I used for the action, which is also from another soundtrack. I guess it wasn't that popular.

That was an interesting quote by Neitzsche but it doesn't sound like my style. I think the short is cryptic enough...I only say that because some of the people on here didn't get what was going on it the short. But I guess there are a couple different ways to read into it. Whatever makes you enjoy it the most its the right one.

Again thanks for the comments.

Just watched this film, first and foremost the opening was great I thought Iwas watching a big hollywood production; it was so clean.
Clean and strong images how did you work with focusing, it was dead on.

Kind Regards
THE HONEST LIAR

And I would agree with SURJONES first post completely.

Here's what my camera setup was.

I also had a P2 Store out on the shoot and I love that little drive. I only had to load four P2 cards into it each day.

If you were my cellmate in prison and your girlfriend sent that photo to you, I'd ask you if I can borrow it. I'd stay in during rec, stick some toothpaste to the back of it (prison glue), slap it under the top bunk and go to work. "Ohhhhh, you like it when I stick it in your P2 drive, don't you, baby. You're gonna be all mine when I get out of here. We're gonna make little shorties together."

Thanks fiercecurry for the comments. I think I still have a little ways to go before I'm ready for the "big time". I do have a first feature that I want to do with the HVX and it would be really easy. I'm just still working on the script for it. I have about three completed scripts right now and another four in the pipeline. The only problem with doing the ones that are done right now is that they are a little complicated and will cost a little money to do. The one that I want to do first is like a "Dazed and Confused" type of movie, which shouldn't cost very much to do at all. Of course depending on a lot of things.

I love that foxi focus controler. I just keep thinking about getting a m2 which would make it pretty worthless.

Good job on the short drew. Can't wait to see one of your features.

The Foxi works really well and I've thought about getting an m2 also. But then I realize that I would only want to get involed with lenses and other follow focus devices if I got a Red camera. I think the stock lense on the HVX is fine and you can get really good DOF off of it if you work on the long end of the lens.
