APOLLO: The Legacy of Hayden- OFFICIAL THREAD

Hey Brandon, thanks for asking. This past week has been dedicated to 3D work. I've spent every night this week working a little bit in Cinema4D and Maya to get familiar with the workflow methods, even got a couple renders out.
StreetRendera.jpg

This image seen above was a really rough render with a basic lighting setup applied to it just to familiarize myself with C4D's GUI. The sky and rain were put in in photoshop just to give the image a little more depth. When I showed the grab to a friend of mine, he thought the cars were real and couldn't figure out how I green screened them so well. I thought that was kind of funny.

This image is a wireframe/render for more light tests. Basically my objective for this was to get headlight beams and taillights to glow and in a few short hours I modeled a simple city block (which can't be seen because of how dark it is... trust me, it's there) and pieced it together with the car and added motion. The link below is a clip of that render.

I'm in dire need of a texturer. I'm still not exactly certain how to texture and therefore would be grateful for someone who knows how to do it. I could model the scene but would need someone to just texture/bump map it. Any takers?

Anyway, this next week, possibly next couple of weeks is dedicated to getting this city block rendered (because it shows up in multiple shots in the film) so if you're interested, shoot me a PM.

Just as a side note to anyone interested in 3D stuff: I've fallen in love with Cinema 4D, the interface is really easy to learn and although it's similar to maya, I think it's a bit more intuitive. You get some really nice results out of the renders with very little work in editing variables.

Yeah, those cars look really good. The first grab you posted of the cars and the rain and everything really has a Sin City look to it, it looks good.

Daniel, These screens look great! I love your documentation of the process, it's very interesting stuff!!

Thanks Chris!

Woops, I just realized one of my Home Depot shop lights is visible in the last screenie above. haha Looks like I'll have to do some compositing to mask that light out.

Daniel your project is really looking very tight. Good luck on the 3d compositing but so far i think you've nailed the look pretty well!

Ok heres my slew of questions, I don't think they have been asked already.

The tracking in room is a little off, but it looks good, I see where you're going with it. Did you do a straight 2d track in AF or is it a full 3D track? At the beginning of thedolley move the camera perspective is flat, but close to the end where there's a slight pan the shot had a sense of parallax to it, thats what threw me off and I started thinking 3d. Great job on the comp, the CC really sold the BG plate realism.

I assume you're keying in AF. What keyer are you using (keylight maybe??) or are you just building up procedural mattes and then some spill suppression. Cause your keys are pretty damn clean.

Also who did most of 3D modeling? Excellent job on the models. Yeah I was totally thinking Sin City on the police cars too. Which ROCKS!!

Daniel, your film has REALLY caught my interest. Just came across this thread for the 1st time today, and really looking forward to seeing this completed! The posters look amazing, and just all around love what I'm seing so far.

My only comment from what I've seen, as far as a critiqe, would be the frame grabs with the people in them on the page before this. Compared to all of the animated stuff, which totally has the Sin City thing going, they look too real ... maybe really getting agressive on the CC can punch them up more to blend better with the rest of the world you've created?

Hey Pixel and Envision! Thanks a ton for checking the thread out!

For the tracking, I only did 2D tracking and then manually put in the pan. Any recommendations on how to fix that? I'd love to get that shot looking perfect.

I'm using primatte, zmatte and keylight. I key out in chunks with masks, and depending on the area, I use a different keyer. I made a BTS bit that discusses the process, but I'm saving it for the DVD. (gotta have some new stuff lol sorry guys)

Norm: Thanks again for checking this out! And I agree with you completely on the composite v. real footage. I think I am going to wait until I have the entire film on one timeline before I attempt to do actual color correction. The screen grabs posted were just some rough tests.

Hey mac, things are still good but production was pretty much put at a stand still for the past week due to exams. I should be able to make some minor progress this weekend, and by next Thursday I should be able to get back into the full swing of things and we can finish this LONGGG leg of post production.

Also, if anyone is interested in texturing a 3d city block, we're still looking for someone to take on that task. I could probably do it, but not very well and for as much as a perfectionist I've been on this project, I don't want to slack in areas I know we could do better on.

Hey Daniel, holy crap man, you've been gettin jiggy with it. I'm excited to see what your finished product will look like because so far it looks awesome!

Is this a feature? EDIT: It's a short lol
