Great Lakes Dragaway (100B squeeze mode - 16:9)

Hey all - here's some footage from a drag strip (Union Grove WI) I was at Friday night. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to get too close but I was still able to get a few angles.

The footage hasn't been CC'd yet and it's a bit dark (I over-compensated the zebra a bit), but after viewing it a few times I kinda like it that way. Gotta love the squeeze mode!!!!

WMV

The shutter was at 60 for the first 30 seconds, then 48 for the rest of the vid. I was thrilled to see how well the 48 shutter speed handled the cars. I haven't received my DVX book yet, so I haven't played much with the scene file settings, but my settings were as such:

Detail Level: 0
V Detail Level: 0
Detail Coring: 0
Chroma level: +5
Chroma Phase: 0
Color Temp: -1
Master Ped: -5
A. Iris Level: 0
Gamma: B. Press
Knee: Auto
Matrix: Normal
Skin tone detail: off
V Detail freq: Thin
Progressive: 24P (Advanced)

inspired from this gentleman's wonderful footage.

The footage is kind of ho-hum...but you don't have a lot of control over how to cover it...I understand. Doesn't sound like we have a lot of amateur drag fans here? I love old cars.

Actually for a guy who's never been to something like that it was pretty interesting for me. Especially to see who's racing what kind of cars. I haven't gotten through all of your footage but it looks like the higher vantage point worked better...not too bad for not being able to get down on the field. I know you haven't relly edited too much but it would be cool to see a rapid fire start off edit, where you play back one start after another...

[edit] Just finished it. Maybe you did work on the edit...don't know, but I thoroughly enjoyed that, just because I've never seen anything like it. After a while I didn't mind the vantage point, maybe because you moved higher? Make sure to post the CC'd version....

this is the first time I have seen the DVX squeeze mode. On my computer it looks really good. If it looks like that on a TV it does really good.

Acutally I'm working on a video that's for 16x9 right now and the squeeze mode seems to do pretty well. It does seem to soften a bit when it's viewed in the 16x9 ratio, but not too bad. Some of the extreme close-up's needed a slight sharpen filter in after effects...I'm anxious to view it on the plasma screen that it will be finally displayed on...

You're right, it's kinda the same thing over and over again. I was feeling that while I was filming it. I wish I could've gotten closer.

The squeeze looks great on a TV - and my TV is a piece of crap. I have an AIW card that spits the result in perfect aspect ratio via composite (not even S-vid) and it looked just as it should on TV. Not sure about plasma. I'm really impressed with the squeeze mode too.

I'll post a CC'd result today.

I was excited to see an example of the squeeze mode myself, as I heard bad things about it. Mostly that you're losing resolution. Is it that you lose resolutoin, or is it you don't get to use all the avalible resolution effectively? I didn't word that very well. It doesn't look bad to me at all! Oh well, I'm not a car guy, but those look like some seriously tuff cars, Outsiders tuff I mean.

To my knowledge, what's happening is you're taking a video with .9 pixel aspect ratio and stretching it to 1.2 (with 1 being a square pixel). So, that means you are going to lose resolution...I think of it as taking any photo into photoshop and scale it up just a little - what happens? It may be close to the original, but it will definitely be a little fuzzier, a little more “pixilated” etc.

I will post some stills from my last shoot soon for everyone to check out the quality/loss of quality. Didn't know it was of such interest because I thought there were lots of people already using it here... I'll put it in another thread because it seems like this one's unintentionally being hi-jacked... :)

Do you have to add those black bars in squeeze mode?
Squeeze mode adds them itself.

The only difference between squeeze on camera and shooting 4:3 & adding 16:9 in post is the ability to adjust the frame in post. This is the advantage. I shot squeeze because I knew I wasn't going to be adjusting the perspective in post.
