On Camera Lighting for DVX100B and HVX200 (Portable Battery Powered & Lightweight)

Greetings Everyone,

I am currently moving from my JVC GY-DV5000U shoulder-mount camcorders to 2-DVX100Bs and 1-HVX200. For my shoulder-mounts, I use Anton Bauer Dionic batteries with the Ultralight 2's when I need a small quick fill light. (25 watts) In my case this is anytime I shoot hand-held (which is 1-2 hours per job on average).

I really am in need of finding a replacement and/or solution for this system for when I start using my new smaller camcorders.

I was looking at some Frezzi Micro-Fill solutions, but did not see something with an easy lightweight battery solution. I am hoping for something simple, quick, and preferably easy to mount/attach to my Panasonic camcorders.

I definitely need at least 25 watts and 45 min. to 1 hour of running time.

Any recommendations would really be appreciated.

BTW I am planning to run my Portable light when I'm handheld, on monopod, or on my GlideCam 4000 Pro rig.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Kewl, Thanks.

Anyone have any experience with other portable on-camera light systems?

(Frezzi, Anton Bauer, Lowel, ELIPZ, Bescor, etc.) ???

Any thing that will work with a lightweight hand-held camera?

I have the Frezzi Mini Fill 100W and I think it rocks - this after screwing around with gigantic battery belts, porta HMI systems and what-not. I like the Frezzi and it's birght! The Bescor battery belts that pair nicely with the Ferzzi - 7PRB, 9PRB and 12PRB start at 5.5 lbs .

Awesome, Thanks for the info jonnyh1968. I was leaning towards the Frezzi Micro-Fill/Mini-Fill and Bescor battery packs as well.

Would you say that having the seperate battery pack over-shoulder or around your waist (belt-pack) is better/easier/more convenient???

well i got the 9 PRB which is supposed to give 45 minutes of run time at 100W (Mini Fill). I'm not sure what the over the shoulder type is but I will say this... the 9PRB is about 6 lbs - not that much. But the 7PRB (35 mins of run time) is 5.5 lbs however it is two smaller lower profile packs that can evenly wrap around your waist or belt weight distributed evenly from your left to right side. The 9PRB is one thicker pack - not that thick - But, it's one pack therefore it typically sits on one side of your waist which is lopsided and uncomfortable. I ust ordered the 7PRB which I'll be using as my main source - the 9PRB will be my back up.

Side note: The Mini kept going! The house fuse blew while shooting today. But the frezzi kept going. yey!

It takes a long time to charge the PRB9 back up to full. - like over night. But still I am very happy with the size and convenience of the whole frezzi/bescor system. Get the dimmer model.

just ordered a zylight

just ordered a zylight

hey there. have a look at zylight.com. they reccomend l-ion packs from tekkeon. ordered those too. got the tekkeons.....look nice, nice form factor and pretty small and light. will let you know about the light when it comes if your interested.....

I bought the vidled LED light over the summer and am extremely pleased with the light. The battery which attaches to the light itself lasts a long time too!

Hi Brian,
The Z50 from Zylight is completly camera mountable via a NOGA arm. Both the light and arm are available on the website (www.zylight.com)

It can be powered by the Tekkeon battery system, with an Anton Bauer PowerTap or AC power supply.

The bonus with the Z50 is that its not just for use as a top light. Plug it into a wall and throw it on an Arri or Lowell stand. Attach it to a mayfer clamp. Light a backdrop, use as a backlight, add color to a product shot or use as a colored rim light. Many possibilities. Small enough to tuck in your existing light kit or favorite Pelican case.

VIDLEDS are affordable, compact and saved our production during the filming
of the Black Angel. I have two and no way I'm I ever going to let go of those
puppies.

Thank you everyone for all your post. A lot of good information from all.

I am getting ready to pick-up the hvx200 and I have been searching for an on camera light. It seems Panasonic could have somehow created a plug in for the light cables as they have for your bigger cameras, (XDCAM, Beta SP, DVCpro, etc.). I think a lot of us would just be going with the Frezzi's or Anton Bauer's, etc.

This thread has been great and I am some what sold on the Vidled lights. I just have this thing where I like to try things out first before I purchase.

1) Has anyone who has purchased the lights had any problems with them?

2) What is your preference, Standard or Deluxe? I was thinking of getting the standard just because it's cheaper, however, is it an inconvenience having the batter pack on top?

3) I noticed a lot of people were leaning more towards the "coolLED". Any reason why?

4) Has anyone used the VariZoom LED camera light #S2010P?
http://www.varizoom.com/products/bat...10_series.html

If so, please let me know what you think. VariZoom sells them for $399.
A mount comes included that attaches to your camera and you use can use a PAN, CAN, or SONY battery.

I have not seen these in person yet but EVS in Glendale, CA has them for $376.

B&H Photo $369+shipping.

Encompass media has them for $379 + shipping
