Researching DIY Rod System Question(s)

so would the Cavision RS-816 system work for a DVX with a DIY 35mm adapter? It's only $85ish, although out of stock at B&H.

I was looking into this rod system as it would save me a few bucks which I'd rather spend on some new tapes and another battery.

Thoughts? It's small but I think I'll be using it for only a 35mm lens support system which should be fine.

Standard Rod Sizes - Metric Accessories

Standard Rod Sizes - Metric Accessories

So the Engineer in me perked up while reading this...

I too am deciding upon a rail system. I am only at about $280 so far for my "HawkEye 35" and deciding whether or not to stick with industry standards, or just go off with my own design. Although very confortable financially, the challange of doing it myself, and for the absolute least cost is very deeply etched in the "production" side of my brain... The "quality" side of my head says... ohhhh crap, here he goes again... :crybaby:

If one were to purchase 1/2" CRES rods, and then purchase an accessory part that is made for 15mm rods, they might look for a thin nylon or other very hard plastic bushing/insert. It could also be made. 1/2" rod is about .090" smaller than 17mm. I don't have any of these metric rods, but I am assuming they are indeed a full 15mm and no more...

One can make or purchase bushings in a variety of lengths, inside and outside diameters. A bushing that is .5" inside diameter and .59 outside diameter and say 1" long, would take up the slack between the 15mm accessory bores, and the 1/2" rod. the bushing may have to have a relief cut along its side. If a clamping action is applied to the bushing, it has to have the ability to be constricted. A split along the axial length of the bushing and removal of say 1/16" of material would allow for this. Again, don't have any of the 15mm stuff or accessories so this may not work depending on how things are tightened.

Now I am leaning on doing this myself and have already found 9/16" rods in lengths a 36" length. This is precision drill blank material and has a 40 microinch surface finish or better. A 36" length costs but $31.59 US. That gives me two corrosion resistant 18" steel rods for about $18 a piece (shipping added to cost).

So then I would not be able to use "industry standard" parts unless I had a few thin metal or nylon bushings. But that is OK - I am likely to D-I-Myself for the rod support system, my HawkEye 35, and whatever accessories I need anyway.

A GREAT place for small quantities of metals at pretty good prices...

My 9/16" rods will be made from:

stock# description Length Stock Each Total

03366 9/16 Dia. O-1 Drill Rod 3.0 Ft. 1 In Stock $31.59 $31.59

Lastly, these folks do supply these precision rods in 19/32" diameter. This is just .003" larger than 15mm. If someone can give us a readout on the actual diameters of the cavision rods, or similar rods, this might just be your ticket...

AND THIS PLACE TOO! Forgot about them: http://www.metalexpress.net/ GREAT PLACE FOR SMALL QUANTITIES OF METAL.

Dimensions between rods??

Dimensions between rods??

Does anyone have the spacing information for the Cavision rod system? I'd wonder what the spacing between rods is center to center.

Toenis had that info on the first page... I have the Cavision RPMD90. It all matches up. :)

Rail Diameter: 15mm
Rail Length: at least 250mm(10")
Rail Spacing: 60mm (r.c. to r.c.) - your rod spacing from center to center
Rail Center to optical axis height: 85mm (or height adjustable)

Best Regards.
