History of FS100 problems & fixes?

Hi,

The history of the FS-100 updates is as follows (each new update incorporates all the previous version fixes)....

version 2.0.0.04080806:
- Various disk performance improvements
- Improvements for 24P support
- Improved compatibility with Final Cut Pro as an AVC device.
- Handle audio recorded at end of clip properly
- Changed the behavior of the organize p2 progress bar. Now it is similar to the OS upgrade progress bar.

version 2.0.0.04061606:
- Auto Stream Detect
- The thumbnails displayed correctly from P2 Viewer and FCP
- When in EXT TC mode, Non Drop is correctly detected
- Added the unlock (UNLK) front panel confirmation screen
- Support 999 clip limit properly
- Various disk performance improvements
- Enabled a timer to update TC/UB DISP screen every second
- Fixed the thumbnail's aspect ratio for HD clips

version 1.0.0.04061906:
- Fixed Avid Import Clip issue when powering down between recordings.

version 1.0.0.04052606:
- Oxford Semiconductor 1394 Bridge chips configuration updated upon System Reset.

Regarding some of the other issues, the number one issue that most people still seem to see is due to the fact that the 2.0 upgrade was done, but a System Reset after the update was not done. Basically, if no system reset is done, some of the changes do not take affect.

At IBC, we also announced version 3.0, which should be available later this year. This will add native 720p24p, 30p and 25p support to FS-100 which will more than double record time. It is also possible to record in the QuickTime file format allowing direct import to Final Cut Pro. This is relevant for both standard and native modes.

Hope this helps,

Matt

My post is a little off topic about the reliability of the FS-100, but I wanted to report on my experience recording to hard drives through a Macbook Pro laptop. I use the Firmtek SATA express 34 card and two SATA drives mirrored. I know this is not a substitute for a FS-100 in the field, but for interviews I have had great success--over twenty 30-80 minute interviews without a dropped frame.

Randolph, Have you tried using that to do direct "Capture Now" through final cut pro , and capturing to SATA external disk, like Drewwabove.

I was told that bus would not be as fast as a normal SATA Bus say on tower's PCI card, so I've been wary.
I prefer SATA drives though and have thought about getting that adapter for for my G4 15" 1.5MHz powerbook.

(BTW- My friends have been having trouble using capture now to their 1.67MHz Powerbooks - they keep getting an 8 frame picture delay that we can't figure out. Ideas are welcome)

I use Capture Now on FCP. Doesn't a PCMCIA bus have a data rate above 100 Mb/s? If so, that should be fine for a single SATA drive, which has a data rate of 50Mb/s empty and about 60% of that nearly full. I am using my two drives as a raid 1 mirror, not a
raid 0, to record same data on two drives simulaneouly for backup, so I would think it would function the same as on a G4. I am also using the SoftRaid software to strip the drives and later separate the mirror array for archiving of a single drive.

How are they viewing and listening to the footage? Video out the FW bus has a delay so if they're viewing on an external monitor via FW out but listening to internal speakers there will be a delay. The monitoring needs to be done the same way for both video & audio. FCP has a setting to compensate for this.

My friends are listening and watching strictly on the powerbook.
It is a real delay, it shows up on the timeline.
We've matched their set-up to mine and everything seems the same.
It's driving us nuts.

is anyone else using capture now ona 1.67 powerbook?

(PS I may get that PCMCIA to SATA adapter, its a good idea, I have some more questions to ask about capturing to raid but will get back later.)
Thanks

gettting hits.

gettting hits.

Hi, I'm new to the technology so bear with me. I just bought the HVX-200 and the FS-100 back in May 2006. I lately have noticed that I'm getting hits when I record on the FS-100. (not on the P2 cards) Random video hits, I don't know how best to describe them. When I freeze frame them on FCP they are squares with red, green or blue colors in them. Sorry I'm not more literate but if there is any more info I can provide let me know. I am now living in Mexico so I am a bit worried. I have not updated FS-100 since I bought it.
Thank you.

fs-100 problems

Thank you Barry, that seemed to fix that problem. One quick question, I was recording a very long take on the fs-100, 50 min, but when I went to dump it on FCP, after organizing P2, etc. It shows up as a bunch of 02:18:04 long takes that al add up to 50 min. I know I must be doing something wrong I just don't know if it's on the fs-100 or on FCP.
Thanks.

The OS system that runs the FS 100 won't allow file sizes bigger than 2 gigs so it breaks them up. You will have to snap them back together in Final Cut, but it should be seemless.

There have been some reports of audio gaps on long records after the parts are put together in FCP. These may however be specific to using P2 Log and the 720p50 workaround, and not an FS-100 problem.

Jgrillo, it would be interesting to know if you notice this issue.

Should I be able to record an 8 minute continuous take on the 8gig P2 card or does the software also split the take in two? That happened to me the other day. I had two takes of equal size on FCP. I'm not sure about the sound issue yet, i've been shooting MOS.

i tested capture now/FCP to my 12inch power book(1.5ghz) to ext. hardrive via USB for 20min. it worked like a charm.

only question i have is...is there a way to start the capture now WITHOUT having a P2 card inside the camera? It seems like there should be a way since with the P2 card inserted, the capture now runs even when the P2 card shows Full (it recorded to the P2 and out to FW -->FCP).

with the fs-100, do you need to have a P2 card inserted?
