Timelapse of SF...

That was a killer clip, Cynic. I'm moving out to the Bay Area in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to shoot some stuff myself. San Francisco is a beautiful city.

Cynic-would you mind giving a laundry list of your settings for this please? Your setup spot was choice. I'm actually coming to SF for a job and was looking for a spot to setup a TL shot. Would you mind offering up more details (Treasure island -turnoffs etc?) This would be a great option for me. Nice work.

Thanks both of you. A partner is vital to getting this shot. My partner climbed up on a tranformer box thats off the side of the road to get above some of the brush and trees.

Example: I dont know the date on this photo, but it aint that clear of a shot, theres 2 trees there now that have grown too big and shooting in between them was difficult, jumping up on that box and setting the tripod up there was very important. Thanks to my buddy, i was against this but he won the ro-sham-bo (rock paper scissors) to go up there, LOL.

Youll want turn turn off on treasure island, go down to the naval base then come back the way you came and stay to the left to get to here. to get this shot. The road is called, Hillcrest. There is no stopping on the road it has no shoulders, but about 100 yards down, there is a gate with a small driveway, which is no stopping either, but if you are fast you can park there, run up there with a friend, partner , assistant, tranny you picked up on broadway, homeless guy you found on market, day laboror you hired on Ceasar Chavez street, however you roll :) . And then get setup, and maybe if you got the guts, jump up on that big 7 foot high trasnformer box there. Then one of you has to wait there, while the other takes the car back down to the parking on the treasure island side and wait for the filming to be done. Its not an easy shot to get , it took us 2 trys because i messed up the settings the first time, and the first time we went looking for the shot, we drove around that island for about 2 and a half hours in the pitch black in some areas. IT gets really scary up there. Hella noise from the bugs, Cicadas maybe?

Heres a pic detailing the shot itself, it looks like the HIGHER road , Forrest would be better, but its not, all trees, but you should go up there because its hella scary! LOL.

Labeled is the turn off and where aprox we were shooting from.

Hope that helps. Remember its a 2 person setup, im the one who sat in the car for an hour board and having to use the bathroom so bad, my partner did all the hard work! :)

And yes, the SF Bay Area is the greatest place to live in the US.

I think SF Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the US, but how is it to live there? Are the people generally nice? Prices? Is it expensive to live there? Any opportunities in the film world available?

Housing is expensive, but you know what, i have a theory on all this, well not a theory, but lets say you live in Arizona or something right, where a house is 150k to 250k instead of the 500k to 650k here.

Now the house is cheaper, BUT you make less money there, and its not like everything else is cheaper. Milk is still 3 bucks a gallon. Video games are still 60 bucks, a candy bar is still 99 cents. It goes for everything. I think it evens out in the end in how much you make, to what you pay for daily items, you know what i mean?

As far as FILM like movies are concerned, im not too privvy on whats going on with that in SF, but i will tell you one thing, it is one of the most artisitcally talented filled Cities, and many people congragate to SF and the surrounding areas for anything and everything artistic and technological.

Silicon Valley, San Francisco, the Tri Valley, the Penninsula, The east bay, all are amazing places! The hub of the digitial revolution, Apple, Intel, Maxtor, etc... all are located here, Konami, EA, Sega, etc... located here. There are a ton of resources in the bay area to get into film as well as people looking for DP's to film their art house style projects.

One can make a living here no problem. I work in San Jose as a software dev, and DVD author. My partner and I also do our best to supplement our HVX hobby by taking on some jobs, but we arent advertising our services yet, ( i need a web designer :( ya i can do tiny bits of software but cant make a website, im dumb)

Find a place on the penninsula, its expensive , but if you look you can find something. I currently pay 1000$ a month for a 1 bedroom apartment in South San Francisco, its very close to where i grew up for 20 years before i set the place on fire, and it is gated and garaged parking for all the tenants, there own spots. A great place. Moving further down raises prices, living in the city costs even more

No where else would you get such a detailed explanation of how to get a shot! :)
I'm printing that off for future reference.

My wife is from Monterey, so we try and get back as often as we can which isn't often. :)

Cant beat the California Coast! There is so much stuff to shoot along highway 1, but im waiting for them to open the devils slide again.

Damn Cynic thanks for the details on the loc and pics too! Speaking of screwing up settings-Can you provide the settings you used for this shot. I'm gonna be in a pinch to get a ton of B-Roll in a short time and can't d*ck with settings all day...my first timelapse too. Appreciate the help-thx

2 Fps 720pn 24p

a default scene file, nothing done to anything just the scene file 1 hacked to 2fps.

shutter was at 250 degrees (synchro scan mode) i would recommend you open it up to about 300 degrees minimum. thats the only setting you will probably want to mess with when you get there. the higher the number, the more light can get in . maybe if you open it up really high maybe even max it to 350 degrees, you can close the f stop down a stop to help with the focus and the grain in the blacks. try that when you get there.

And i love to help, thats what im here for :)
