Denied Barry's book by Panasonic

Yeah but he screwed up a hell of a lot so I guess he's just the guy we immediatly think of when de-regulation comes up.

Do we feel that it is inappropriate for B & H to sell the gray cameras, yes.

It's somewhat ripe for Panasonic to be 'complaining' about the grey market when its THEIR discriminatory pricing policies that creates the grey market in the first place!

Generally speaking I've paid Panasonic a substantial premium for my HVX over somebody that lives in another 'territory' for no other reason than Panasonic's accountants know that they can get away with hiking the price.

There thats my thought for the day!

Hi Indy,

Excuse me but in many cases it is the cost of doing business in a country that set the pricing, not our pricing. It is the cost of marketing, the cost of duties, the cost of having a building with heat, air-conditioning, utilities, the cost of people to sell the product, and service the product. It is different in every country and each country has to deal with the cost of doing business there. Between these factors and the cost of money and the exchange rates, gray market is a healthy animal. No I do not believe that Panasonic is gouging anyone on the cost of the camera, it is not discriminatory pricing at all, it is the cost of doing business in a particular place in the world.

Best regards,

Jan

In all fairness to Ronald Reagan, he didn't take office until 1981.

You know you are right, and I have been remembering when it happened incorrectly. Thanks for that. I know it wasn't Jimmy Carter. I was just remembering where I was when it happened and had forgotten. It was Ronald Reagan, but you are right it was in the early 80's.

Best,

Jan

I am in the same boat. I bought my HVX from B&H two months ago. Jan has been helping me over e-mail. I was on the phone with B&H yesterday, and they told me they would "look into the problem". After reading this I am now on the phone with them again. They have just informed me they will replace my camera as well. I'm glad they are correcting the problem, and it is helpful to know that I'm not the only one with the problem here...

They are also replacing the two 8GB P2 cards I ordered as part of the package. The warranty cards for them were also in Japanese.

I asked them about shipping. They are e-mailing me a UPS shipping label so it will be shipped back to them on their cost, and they are also giving me free UPS 3-day shipping on the new HVX camera I will order from them on Monday (basically doing a "cross-ship" return).

I am very pleased with their customer service here. I've been buying from them for over 10 years and I'm glad they are taking care of the situation.

Thats great to hear about how B&H is dealing with this... I don't even want to know how much money I spend with them, as many others here. I will do business with them in the future for sure!

so that looks to be my problem too :( i guess i'll just have to inform B&H, the main reason why i'm concerned is this seems to be the reason for the scene file incompatibility. o well, i'm sure B&H well swap it for me.

Regardless of your issues with BHPhoto the scene files should still be compatible.

DON'T BUY A USED CAMERA FROM B&H.

I just purchased a used HVX from them (our second one) and probably got raw911's returned camera. The thing was all in japanese!!! I have also bought a TON of stuff from them and I was VERY anoyed that they didn't indicate on their website or on the phone that these used cameras are all the japanese rejects that people in this threat are returning to them.

So anyway I refused to get a new one from them and asked for my money back. I am now buying it from specialized communications. I hope I don't get screwed by them too as I already sent in a bank check to get the additional 2% discount.

By the way, B&H made me pay return shipping and I am sure they will not reimburse me for the original shipping. I am losing close to 100 bucks for their non-disclosure. I could KILL!!!

EDIT: I am so pissed that I think I'll start a whole new topic about B&H.

The Federal Government made gray market legal back in the 70s, thank you Ronald Reagan. ...

Hi,

Just a bit of clarification here: Reagan was president from 1980-1988. Nixon, Ford and Carter presided during the 70s. And this type of arbitrage "grey market" trading has been going on since the 1800s. Doesn't mean it's a good thing, I'm just saying... ;-)

best regards,
-Greg

I had considered buy a couple of items from B&H but now I think I'll wait and see if they rectify their problems with the HVX. While the items I was looking at are certainly not a problem, I find their business activities to be "questionable" and it's perhaps better to deal with someone else with more integrity.

What was said was Regan make grey market legal, not that he started it, cause grey market has been around as long as there have been humans willing to rip off other humans, just saying...

If you're thinking of buying from B&H, as I was just about to do today, write them with concerns about what you're reading here. Ask them to clarify what's going on, and state you have concerns about their integrity. If they think they'll lose sales over this issue, they'll jump on it.

I'm calling them first thing Monday morning to ask about what's up, cause I was about to buy a second HVX200 from them on-line tonight. I'll tell them what I've read, and that I need some guarantee that I won't befall the same grey market problems.

 Well at least I'm not the only one!

I thought I was buying a 'brand new' US HVX from B&H.

When I was also denied Barry's book because from Panasonic because I was told it was actually Japanese camera.. I was furious .. and suggested that B&H are dropped B&H from the Authorized list.

I paid a premium to buy from B&H .. and only did this to avoid any of this kind of warranty hassle.

Now I am not sure if I should vote with my feet, or give B&H a second chance.

I grow organic carrots and sell them to a store that only sells certified organic produce. A customer buys a carrot and finds that it is laced with Dieldrin, DDT, Roundup, Raegan Policy, Bush Policy and other poisons. They ring me up to complain but I know that the carrot didn't come from my farm so I just tell them, "I did not sell the carrot to you nor did I represent the carrot to you as an organic carrot."

The initial response to raw911 aside, it is great that Panasonic have stepped in to help remedy the BH situation. After all BH is taking liberties with Panasonic's reputation.

In this thread FIVE people have reported gray market or non-disclosure issues with BH: raw911, Mordoc Kyle, Doris, THETHE and ai Newman. BH lied to Jan claiming that raw911 had purchased a secondhand camera. Then, even after BH were caught selling gray market cameras, they quietly resold a Japanese HVX to an unsuspecting second hand buyer! BH are being downright deceitful and stupid and that has to be bad for business.

Panasonic should give BH and all dealers a choice, only sell authorised cameras or only sell gray market cameras and get off the Authorised List. Panasonic should be prepared to blacklist dealers who fail to comply, there should be consequences for abusing the trust of the manufacturer and customers.

I was intending to purchase some items through BH and even though I am sure they would deliver I don't know if I want to reward a company that clearly lied to customers and to the Panasonic product manager.

Is the political element of this thread going to end?

No. I dislike all politicians. Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green,etc...

They make us bicker at each other.

OK,we're done.
