experimenting with high Master Pedestal

i did a whole test and wrote up an article on this method a year back i wish i could find the images. shooting master ped +3 then crushing the blacks in post preserves a significant amount more detial in the darks than crushing in camera. even barry green said the results were "very interesting", or something to that effect.

good work dude the night shots look great and very natural.

infact next time try shooting the actors lighter, and brighter and bring down the brightness inpost, to make them pop more. and keep noise at an even lower level. light like you wanted to make it look like it was day. and pull a day for night with brightness and contrast.

it looks striking.

was about to say

i did a similar atest a while back to see how much detail one could preserve with the whole pedestal thing

tried shooting at -7, 0 and then + 7

i noticed that at +7, then crushing the blacks in post made too much of the darks crush because when you flatten an image that much ( +5 - + 15) your really making the blacks and shadows almost the same color so when you want to crush that in post, your crushing both the shadows and blacks to a fused image getting rid of all the detail, so you haev to find that fine line where you preserve all the detail and keep that balance in camera between the different shades of dark. Try it, youll see what imean

and yeah, i got + 3 too :) hehe kewl.

I personally like the lower master ped (-7) in bright environments for a lot of contrast (then I desaturate).

what we are trying to say the fox, is if you shoot with a master ped in camera of aruond + 3, you have the most latitude to shoot with in post, if you put it too high, your making all the shades of dark too similar so when you crush, your crushing more than just the black areas,

if you crush the blacks in camera, your loosing some picture information. Ill do a little test later on to show you guys, before and after.

Thanks! I wasn't aware of that.
