I need help capturing from the P2 to Final Cut??????

Hi,

I just picked up an HVW-200 and am trying to teach myself how to use this camera and need a hand.

I am having a terrible time trying to get my footage off the damned P2 card. I have tried external card readers, firewire connection, and different machines and I still can't get it off. If anyone could offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Jay

In the camera, change the device mode to USB Device. Now on the phyisical CARD itself, while its still in the camera, change the tiny switch to Write Protect. Now plug the USB cable into the camera, and plug the other end into the Mac.

The P2 card should mount in about a second on the desktop. Now go to FCP and then file import, then select panasonic P2. If it doesnt find it , then select the P2 drive specifically for it.

What platform are you working with?
Is the P2 software and the P2 Viewer installed? This is important...

You better TAKE A STAND here and tell us more details ;o)

Edit:Cynic was faster and more detailed, harrrrrr...

I'm not finding this option. I appreciate the help so far but I could use some clarification. Are you talking about the button on the back that let's you switch between camera and vcr?

yes. press that button down to go into viewer mode, you know where you see all the clips aranged in a grid?

Now when in that menu, you hold down that button again for like 3 or 4 seconds until it switches to DEVICE MODE. but there are 3 types of device mode , Firewire Device, Firewire Host, and USB Device. You want to use USB Device.

(it is much more stable and reliable than the firewire mode)

You change what mode it will be in the menu in your HVX , the menu you access when in just normal camera mode. The menu is labeld PC Mode. In there , make sure its on USB DEVICE.

Then do the steps i laid out earlier.

Also, what version of FCP are you working.

PS: if you keep checking back frequently, im always refreshing to help you, but you gotta be here, because i leave work at 5pm today

Cool, I am going to try this now. Should I be using a USB cable if I am using the USB Device setting??

yes, of course, it has to be a mini USB to regular USB cable of course. Also make sure you fill this out immediatly for the FREE HVX BOOK written by Barry Green, the guy who makes this site, and its officially endorsed by Panasonic. Its free , just fill the info out.

http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/support/contact-HVX200-book.asp

free shipping as well. just gotta wait a month, but its FREE! All your questions can be answered in there, but in the meantime just stay with me here.

this is the cable you are looking for, if you have a digicam , then you got one of these laying around. The HVX didnt come with one. Its like 5 bucks to get one though. but the only problem is that youd have to go get it and it would delay our little support process we got going on here.

I am working w/ version 5.1.1 of FCP

When I try to access the device selection screen it says:

1394 Device
Disconnect

It isn't giving me an option to select a device??

I have all the hardware for it. I am a lab assistant / work study at Hilbert College in NY and am trying to write a manual for our students so they don't have to dick around with this mess when it's time for them to get after it.

Ok, you area almost there, you need to turn the camera off then turn it back on. Now you see the view finder, dont press anything, instead hit the MENU button on top of the camera. Go to the PC MODE menu , then change it to USB DEVICE.

Now hit the VCR button again, to get to the viewer mode, then Hold down the button again for a few seconds to make it go to DEVICE mode, this time it will say USB DEVICE DISCONNECT instead of 1394.

Now plug in the USB cables. and the P2 will mount, i garuntee you

It seems as though it is working!!!!!! An other 2 minutes of importing and we will know for sure. Thank you so much. I am going to fill out that form to get the manual when it's done.
