Anyone else make a hat for their HVX?

I find the hardest part of working with any video cam in the field is cutting the sun from the lcd screen.

So I use a couple of clamps to make a lid over the camera and now I have shade wherever I go.

I attach it to the tripod tilt/pan handle so if a wind takes it, it's not attached to the camera. (I originally thought to use a threaded rod in that 1/4"-20 at the top of the camera, but thought better not to.) I also don't leave it unattended!

Anyway, I find it works for me.

Thought I'd share.

How about a hoodman type LCD hood or flex arm and french flag? Sorry, but that looks like a kite waiting to fly, not to mention difficulty in moving from stix to handheld rapidly.

I'm shooting a feature so there's no quick need to go from mounted to handheld. And like I said, I stay with it, ready if a gust of wind comes.

I find the hoodman barely usable. Better with this as the sun is cut down.

If there is any wind at all, that will certainly translate into camera movement, especially if the shade is attached to the handle of the fluid head. It can also affect the camera balance, which would require the friction on the head to be increased to keep the camera from slowly sliding forward or back.

Attaching the shade directly to the tripod would be better, but there would still be the potential for camera shake if there is wind.

hmmmm.... I just dont think this thing would be very functional/effective in comparison to other devices

to each his own though

It's not a great solution--it has to be a still windless day for it to work. I prefer to work under a setup of a 10x10 tent so the whole production cart and camera are under shade, and the shade isn't attached to the camera in anyway.

I was hoping not to imply this is a great solution, but to get input on what others have done to create shade.

I find my focus, exposure and camerawork is far superior when I have control over how I view the image.

So what are the other devices besides a French Flag (which I often find not large enough) or a Hoodman (sometimes helpful, but not always if the sun is in the exact right/wrong position.
