Such a lovely day out here in North Carolina, I finally got around to doing some yard work. Using a pole saw to trim off some tree limbs, etc, and of course getting tangled up in massive spider webs (see prior discussion of spider webs).
So anyway I get back in, check on DVXUser, fiddle around for 20 minutes or so, run into my daughter and she says "what's that on your shirt?" Hmm, I dunno, I'm thinking leftover spider web? My wife comes around and looks at whatever's on the back of my shirt and then says "uh, I think you need to take that shirt off."
So I do, and THIS is what was on the back of my shirt.
http://www.icexpo.com/HVX200/caterpillar.mp4x (right-click and save as, and remove the trailing "X" in the name so you save it as a .mp4)
Now by this time my daughter's wigging out, but I think that a) it's about the coolest thing I've seen, it's a wild hairy caterpillar thing, it looks like the wooly mammoth of caterpillars, and also it has a cool red mohawk. Immediately the HVX comes out to shoot it. And b) that crazy thing rode around on the back of my shirt for at least 20 minutes, and who knows how long?
Eventually I coax it out onto a leaf, and then I start to piece together the video, and I figure -- hey, why don't I google "wooly caterpillar mohawk" and see what this thing actually is?
My search leads me to this page:

Yeah.
Hmm.
Not thinking he's that cool anymore. That "red mohawk" is chock full of toxic stinging nettles! Here we have a caterpillar that can deliver a nasty, nasty sting, and he rides around passively on my shirt for half an hour? And I'm wondering what other surprises await me out here in this yard. Heck, back in Vegas the only wildlife you ever encountered was the occasional drunken teenager passed out on your lawn. Definitely a different world over here...
