24p vs. 24p advanceed

I went to shoot the other day, just for practice and I was wondering what is better or the more standard to use....24p or 24padvance...I put my setting to f5 which i believe is regular 24p. I use an Avid Xpress Pro HD with Mojo. Is there any particular one or any big difference between the two?
Thanks
J.C.

The pulldown sequence for PA is slightly different, and your NLE must support it for it to decode properly. Instead of 2:3:2:3, PA uses 2:3:3:2.

Is this in the right forum? Are you asking about the HVX or the DVX?

Advanced pulldown makes it easier for an editing program to remove pulldown and extract the original 24p frames. Any 24p-supporting editor can remove it.

24p (standard), however, can also be edited on a 24p timeline if the editing app can remove it. The only 24p app which currently can't is FCP.

you really need to know what you are doing if you shoot in advanced mode. I shot some stuff on a HVX in 24PA now that its all edited I am finding out that it must be imported to a 24p timeline or whatever, now the project looks crappy. I would stick with 24p regular till you do more research.

Avid has the option to do either 24p or 24pA pulldown for a 24p timeline. You just have to tell it which to use in your settings.

There's a teeny bit of a more pronounced motion stutter with 24pA if you edit on a 60i timeline, but not enough in and of itself to make the footage look "crappy." It's very subtle and many people can't even see it.

More than shooting with advanced pulldown, your problems most likely have to do with moving the camera too quickly, which will be the case with 24pA or 24p standard. You can't shoot 24p like it's a video camera; you have to learn to move like a film camera.

In any case, if you're shooting 24p (any pulldown), you should edit in 24p if you can.
