Trail of The Dead

The link attached is the very first stuff that I shot with my HVX. I was the stunt coordinator on this project and got my camera 3 days before it was finished. I shot some behind the scenes stuff and this is what we got.
The project was being shot on Varicam and the dp really liked what he saw from my camera. I was pretty busy and would have liked to have shot some of the action sequences as well, but couldn't do both. It is a pretty big file, about 55 mgs and running time is 4:18.
Your comments would be welcome.
Thanks,
steve

really cool man, would love to see some of the film

question for ya, What kind of light, power and such were you using for the exterior night scene?

Was a generator used? Which kind?

10 k's were up, just one I believe. I was pretty busy, but I think that is all. It was a real movie set so we had jenny's.

looks interestng. Certainly some recognizable character actors. The Sheriff for sure... seen him in a ton of stuff.

So, the A camera was a varicam and your HVX was a 2nd camera for fight choreography and all that?

I think you'll see a lot of this type of thing going on in the stunt and fight world as these cameras gain more respect. I plan on shooting a kungfu flick with just HVXs.... For the Varicam rental, I could buy another HVX or so...

Thanks for showing... What's the plans for distribution and exhibition?

10K light!

woah crazy.

ive had some success using two 500W work lights for emulating moon light at night time to give that nice backlight glow.

But a 10K light! man. I guess it must have been pretty far away then?

What did you guys do for electricity/ generators?

Looks great man, 18k HMI pars for night exteriors are the most powerful thing I've worked with- man those things are huge.

a 10 k is like sunlight in a box.

yo ushould see the REALLLY big ones, they are like 15 or 20K they were using it os fake sunlight in a hotel room in NY. the thing was shooting from like 2 blocks away. it was AWESOME.

Was that like 1080i? or 24p in 1080 stream. it has interlace lines all over it. just confused as to what format it was.

My camera was not used on the production. It was just with me. When the dp saw what was up, he wanted to know if we could use it for a third camera. I said that I didn't know enough about it to rent it to him yet or tell him how to use it. And I have learned to not "give" things away to Hollywood.

I haven't shot anything "Stuntwise" with this camera. I am getting ready to shoot a short presentation piece on a script that I have been developing for a while now. Some pretty nasty and violent scenes. I will post them when I have them.

the really cool lights are the big Musco or Beebe lights that come on a truck and a crane.
Wayyyyy cool. Fifteen 6k's on a crane.....*****'n.

I think you need to put it in the context of the movie, and the fact that I shot what I could given the parameters of my work load already. The stuff I shot was just an EXAMPLE or test if you will. This stuff has no bearing on what the movie is or isn't. It would be much like deciding what the outcome of Titanic with just seeing "I'm King of the world".

It is what it is. Let us hope that death scene is part of the blooper reel or merely coverage

I just found the manner in which cowboy # 2 died. Very authentic. :D

The qaulity of the footage was okay. The levels seem off; very ghostly blacks but the detial looks great (it should, it's an HVX).

Thanks for sharing !:beer::thumbup:

SWeeeeeT. Lookin forward to it.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
John,
I literally pulled this out of the box and shot with it. I don't think that this movie is going anywhere but straight to video.
I have shot some other night scenes, but with less light. 2600 watts on a night exterior of a cabin. I tried changing my master pedestal on that shoot and didn't like any of the test shots other than having it set at zero.
The settings for the night exterior from Trail were 1080 24p 1/60. I "think" the iris was 2.4. It would have been nice to have had some time to fiddle with the camera, but I was busy killing people and so forth.
The upshot of both of my experiences at night with the HVX is this.....Light everything with as much as you can. Whatever looks good to the eye is not necessarily the right light. External monitors are a must. And you cannot be preoccupied with doing anything else including directing or sound.
I will post a night interior that I shot for a friend of mine later today if I can.

John,
What do you think would have changed the ghostly blacks? Or even more technical, what would you have set your settings at?
And as I think of it, the quality of the footage on the internet is not quite what it is in the computer, but that is really negligible in this conversatiion.
