Edited a 720/24pn project in 720 23.97 timeline. How do you downconvert and to DVD?

Hello,

I shot some footage with the HVX in the 720 24pm mode. Edited it in Avid in a 720 23.97 timeline. Now I'm not sure what to do to next to get the edited project on a DVD. I know it has to be downconverted to SD, but not sure how.

Do I export a QT ref in HD resolution and downconvert in Sorenson? if so how?

Do I downconvert in Avid? if so how? then just create an MPEG-2 file in Sorenson.

Thanks for the help.

I have been using TMPGEnc because it can add repeat fields to a 24pn stream so that the decoder can emulate the pulldown for viewing at 30i (or 60i as Panasonic would have it). I export a QT reference from Avid as input for TMPGEnc. I don't know if Sorenson can do this or not.

Having said that, there is a memory leak problem when the source file is HD resolution (1280x720). It doesn't matter if the material is 24p or 30p. I started a thread on the Avid board, "Memory leak in QT codec for HD".

Couple little corrections - Panasonic would say 30i or 60p... it is Sony that came up with the 60i stuff...

Sorenson can take QT reference - also, fields are not added to MPEG2 encode. Pulldown flags are encoded into the stream so that the DVD player inserts the pulldown field into the NTSC video stream. That way the disc stays progressive but can play back as interlace when needed.

The same is true for the 16:9 anamorphic flag. Based on the monitor setting in the DVD player it will play back full height anamorphic or letterbox.

They do now... it was a marketing war years ago when 720p60 was introduced, Sony felt that the 60 was better than the 30. The nomenclature at the time was always resolution/progressive or interlace/frame rate. With frame rate being the key issue. In order to use match 60, Sony introduced the field rate into the nomenclature causing confusion for a while. Same thing with the segmented frame nomenclature.

Now it is a mixture of field rate or frame rate with 60i still being edited at 30 frames an 60p being edited at 60 frames but only addressed via 40fps timecode.

Ah the joys of marketing and technology.

hmmm - with the timing of this question I wonder if this is another sundance submittee :)

anyhow - we are working on our dvd for submission now - this is the workflow that we use for 720 24P

we have 20 timelines in avid comprising the film

export from avid as quicktime movies (QT references have caused problems) this takes about 8-10 hours

encode to mpeg with tmpgenc - make sure to set display as pulldown - about 6-7 hours

Process video clips with videoredo - this realigns the timecodes for sound and picture - without this we had audio drift - this tool has saved us in this area - about 1 hours

author dvd using tmpgdvd - about 1 hour

so as you can see its a full day to cut a version - then you check it - find things that just didnt work on a tv and redo the whole process

cost of tools after avid
tmpgenc - about 80 -90
videoredo - 50
tmpgdvd - 50-60

dvds look great when they are complete - with only a minor video hiccup here or there - not sure why that happens - any ideas on that would be appreciated

Perhaps the QT ref codec for DVCPRO has an issue. Have you tried transcoding to DNxHD before doing the reference movie?

I am also submitting to Sundance (crunch time everyone!) and I am using the SD down convert from the Adrenaline directly to a DVD recorder. I am just starting to play with HD-DVD encoding and authoring but Sundance doesn't screen HD-DVD.

Michael

Michael - that would prob work - but it would be a workflow of the same length - everytime we edit we would need to transcode - becuase we have about 50 hours of footage we cannot transcode everything.

Thanks for the tip though - prob would work if we transcoded in the beginning.

yes - crunch time - sleep no more for the next week - edit edit edit, fix sound, edit edit edit, fix a little color, edit edit edit, at last minute drop in mail :)

I am referring to transcoding just the sequence - since you can mix formats, as you add DVCPRO to the timeline all you will need to transcode are the additional clips. I think transcoding just the sequences will be lest time via a QT reference than all the steps you outlined.

Good luck with your submission - mine will be in rough cut form for now for the festival.

Michael

oh -i would love it if the transcode works - and i understand the mixed formats - but what about handles - can we trim the trancoded clips - how would it get the handles - is it smart enough to link the transcoded files to the originals?

You can transcode a sequence with handles just like a batch recapture of a timeline. It will protect for handles to cover any transition effects, you would have to add handles to cover any kind of changes you would want to do.

Michael

I tried doing the transcode. It does avoid the memory leak, which is evidently in Avid's DV100 Codec, but not in the DNxHD codec.

Not a great workaround because it consumes time and disc space.

I just posted an update on my thread on their board. Sure hope they're paying attention...

My last project was 720p 24pN. I exported as a QT reference from Avid. Then, in Soresen, I encoded it as a widescreen MPEG2 (720x480 16:9) with progressive encoding. It worked fine.

That sounds like a cool feature. What other versions of Avid might it be available in?

Avid just released XpressPro 5.6, which seems to have fixed the memory leak in the dv100 codec. I don't have to transcode everything to DNxHD any more, which saves huge amounts of time and disc space.
