hey guys, i was following a tutorial from videocopilot... when i go to render, im rendering with loseless quality, but it takes 10 minutes to render 10 secs.. wtf?!

is this normal?

All depends on how complex your composition is. What is it you're rendering?

In short, Yes - one of my teachers told me somthing like "After effects breaks every pixel into 3 parts, and analyzes every one" I guess that might explain the long rendering times. I have found that sometimes exporting as an AVI goes faster, maybe its just me.

I'm doing the blemish revomal from videocopilot, its got two layers, and an adjustment layer with two effects. Im exporting it as lossless avi, I think this is ridiculous.. 10 mins for 10 secs. lol, i wanted to use after effects to color my music videos... *sigh*

Im using after effects on my laptop e1505, 2.0 ghz dual core, 1 gig of ram, 60 7200 rpm .. the program is alot slower than my sony vegas when it loads up.

The noise reduction effects is one of the most comprehensive plug-ins you can use. It requires multipass analysis for everyframe, in other words, to calculate frame 5, it must compare frames 2, 3, 6, and 7, and then make calculation bases accordingly...

Wait til you start doing High Definition...

AE7 and sony vegas cant be compared.

well dam.. i cant take this anymore!!! lol. I loaded it on another computer and it took 20 minutes to render. ugh. oh well i gave AE a try.

vegas needs to step up and give me more image control dammit

You could try Mutli Machine rendering, I took a 3 Day render down to 4 hours with 8 P4 3.0Ghz. Its usefull if you have a couple computers to throw at it and a Simple network.

I dunno, i wish vegas compositing mode added more stuff like adjustment layers and etc..etc.. it would be nice to do everything in a NLE

I love AE7, Vegas... well... :badputer:

There's a huge difference between an NLE and a compositing application.

If your doing editorial type things don't use AE7. if you need to do a lot of image manipulation then don't use an NLE.

If you want to lower your render times then learn how to use the application more effectively. Instead of using temporal noise reduction use spatial. If you don't know what the difference is and how it effects your work then you are the problem not AE7.

People can touch up photos in iPhoto or they can learn Photoshop and "really" manipulate images. The choice is yours.

As far as rendering goes AE is actually quite efficient if you know how to use it...

Quick question - were you suggesting multi-machine rendering for AE7? How do you do you set that up?

I'm rendering out a fairly complex animation, 15 seconds long, uncompressed, 3 different composition, each with at least 9-19 layers and mult nested comps in each as well...it's taken about 15 minutes to render at the pace it's going now with a dual 2 ghz Mac G5 with 1.5 GB RAM.

This should give you an idea of how long these things take...optimizing your work in AE and optimizing renders are the two biggest areas one should familiarize themselves with...if not, you're left frustrated and scratching you head...

thanks for the info oneinfiniteloop - can you recommend any reading on these topics? this would be a great thing to do while waiting for these renders to finish up :D thanks

If you think AE renders are too long, stay away from anything 3D.

You don't know what longs render times are until you are dealing with 2-6 hours per frame.
