Flint, the problem there lies in the fact that once you put it on google video or youtube, they own your video. If he goes on to make alot of money from his video, youtube might not want to surrender rights

exacty. never ever put stuff on youtube. these sites are basicallt there to feed free content to corps. they don't own it but you grant them certain rights including derivitive rights. never ever put anything you care about on youtube.

yep, Mark is correct -- they can use your video! :)

I see your point, but at these low resolutions, what exactly are they gonna do with it? if you uploaded a 320x240 version, it's more of an ad really to go to the manhole site and see the full series and full versions in high quality.

but I see your point. if you want 100% exclusivity, then stay away from youtube.

:)

why do I bother trying? :crybaby:

Read on Einstein:

"However, by submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and its successor's) business"

This means when Viacom buys YouTube, I just gave them the right to take Man-Hole and make their own show out of it.

There are already TV shows devoted to "Viral Video" and the networks make advertising revenue off of the content, and are under NO obligation to even acknowledge the content creator, much less pay them.

That's what I'm talking about.

Ha ha, nice banner!!!!!

Watching this on the big screen was a pleasure that web video just doesn't have. I'm just too distracted when watching stuff on the computer. Always have something else going on and I never can give full attention if it's over 2 minutes.
I'm glad I was able to experience these with an audience for that extra viewing pleasure.

Just bumping this because I've gotten a lot of good feedback and want to see if I can encourage others to voice thoughts.

So now that I've watched it, great job. I felt like I connected with the story a lot more than previous episodes. This one really had a soul and a good arc. I loved the shots from the Promenade, especially the kiss, what perfect sun! Timur did a great job, the shooting really did help tell the story. While I think the use of the adapter helped the piece a lot, I almost felt like it was a little too much. I guess no adapter's perfect and something's gotta give if you want that shallow DOF look, but I felt like at times the background was a little too out of focus and at one point I thought I could see the image vibrating a little (when CJ is walking away). One picky thing, why no tripod on that cool shot of them in the park with the woman and her dog? All around I think this was excellent and the evolution of this series is great.

thanks Ryan, I appreciate the comments. We indeed want to keep the series evolving into more of a normal world than the first three episodes. I think in #4 we did find a better balance between crazy funny stuff (like Gerbles on a Bus) and making the characters more like actual characters. And I want to keep going this way. A lot of people have responded the way you did, happy that things got a little more complex character-wise.

I think there was no tripod in that shot because that day we were largely running and gunning around the city. We covered the same scene in several locations, and I think it was just easier to hand-hold it.

About the adaptor, I'm very happy with the addition, not just for DOF, but for the overall look it gives. A lot of people complain that adaptors are too soft, but to my eye, it adds a real organic feel to it. So I am not just one of those DOF freaks. But if there seems to be too much DOF to your eyes at certain points, that's a choice more than a fault of the adaptor. I know on the Promenade, Timur asked me at points how much DOF we wanted and how much we wanted to see the city, and we kind of spilt the difference so you could tell it WAS the city back there.

Not sure the vibrating image. I just rewatched that scene in two of the encoded versions. The encoding is a little less smooth in the image than the uncompressed version, but...not sure.

I wanted CJ to sort of fade into the background that way, as if sort of magically disappearing from her life. And I hope that to the normal audience member (not some picky DP like you :) ), the power of the image will overcome imperfections like that.

Finally, I usually never think like this, but I'm glad we added the adaptor because ultimately it adds the aura of higher production values to anything shot on video. To the untrained eye, it basically IS film. And I've been doing my own thing long enough and now starting to think about more "marketing" aspects like that.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks again for the comments. This is the kind of discussion I was hoping for on this.

P.S. I don't think I got a release for that woman and her dog, so SHHHHHHHHHH...
