Hi all, this is my first post in here and after looking around couldnt find an answer to my question, which is.....what's the best hot shoe light for use with the DVX? I would like something i could kinda get a 'spotlight' effect with (like the effect Mark Romanek achieves in the Fiona Apple 'Criminal' video) but that also has a broader use too maybe. I have about £300 to spend so if anyone has any knowledge in this area or even owns a good one any advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks. Doug.

It's interesting that that Fiona Apple video got so much attention and positive feedback, when in fact all it seems to be (to me) is a decently strong, single light a few inches (probably >12" or so) away from the lens; easily duplicable using a very cheap halogen light, such as a Bescor MPL-645 dimmable 50W light (~$150 USD), or similar.

The real cost in an on-camera light comes from trying to exactly AVOID the Fiona Apple video quality. Desired is a clean, even light; NOT the deer-in-headlight type look.

So, if it is the Fiona thing you want, it will be easily achievable, and cheap at that.
A good, even, and nice on-camera light will cost you some money though.

Check out Zylight, they have a GREAT light where you can even change colour.

There's really a LOT of choices out there. Some swear by the Pag6. Frezzi makes some great lights too. And we make LED lights also.

I have a frezzi micro fill dimmable and I do like it, however I'm planning on getting one of Vidleds light soon.

What I cannot recommend is the ianiro divino http://www.ianiro.com/divino.asp
We got it at work, it's pretty expensive and it looks sweet, but that's about it...
However it might be able to create the look you want because it's pretty much a "spotlight" with a very small radius. It's more like an expensive toy - I have an old Bauer-Bosch light from eBay for 11 Euro which is better than the divino because it has a larger reflector.

anything more affordable

Yikes, no, that doesn't look like a good light. At all.

PM me, and I might be able to help you out with a LED light that will work well for you, before you waste some $50 bucks on something that won't do much of anything.
Not sure what your budget is, but we might have DEMO units or seconds lying around that will suit you just fine.
