TPR Films presents "A Devastating Judgement"

In school we had the task to make a short movie within 1 week. This is mine.

A Devastating Judgement is about a man, who is waiting for the call, which might change his life completely.
It is in german, but hopefully you can still enjoy it.

I don't like the title, sounds like a bad 80's movie. Perhaps you should call it. Cellular.

Hah, just kidding.

Hey, I like way its being shot and edited... is there any term for that?

But to be honest, I have no idea why he shot himself, maybe if you could post the subtitles here it would help.. - :)

cheers

This guy waits for his girlfiend's call. She is at the doctor, who tells her if she either has aids or not.
He hears her crying, as she calls, so he drops the cell phone, but what he doesn't know: She doesn't have aids, but she is pregnant.

Here are the subs:

//edit: I added english subtitles to the movie.

WoW! great work! i love your jerky camerawork & quick editing style, it really helps the story as so often in these type of movies you have long boring dutch angle shots & closeups of a guy smoking a cigarette in 47 different ways.

Liked the lighting. The acting is very good and the continuity is spot on.

Agreed about the title though, you heed to change it. 'The Result' ???

I think the story is a little over the top - would you really take that kind of drastic option? I think also maybe not showing the gun until after the call might be an idea too.

How did you get the nice slim aspect ratio? You use a 16:9 adapter or something?

Overall i enjoyed it & it looks great!

I need a version with the subtitles on the video so it's a little more straight forward. yeah?

I thought it was good. It's extremely to the point, although in my opinion too much so. I don't care that he's going to kill himself. I don't have to like the character, but I should care about him. Possible letting us into his head with V.O. before the phone rings. Doesn't need to give it away, but the opening tension isn't story. It's just good music and editing (which did do a pretty decent job).

Question though, how did you do the single frame exposure raises. Like the scene was exposed normally, then for a frame or two the exposure jumped up and it was brighter for a split second. I can't imagine doing that frame by frame (although possible), but I'm just curious how you did it.

Editing, cinematography, and acting were all very good though.

Looks pretty good can you remember the settings you used ... and did you use all natural lights and also what did you use to edit the film... I like it though!!

There is nothing wrong with the title, it's a superficial thing for people to ask you to change. The handheld camera work made it seem more tense, it worked great. The music was good, the sound was very good and the lighting was great, I thought you made a good short, then I read the subtitles posting, now I think it's a great short. Keep it up. I'll admit, when I saw the gun in the posted pictures I instantly thought this would be too cheesy to handle, 9 times out of 10 when people involve guns in their short indie films, the story line will revolve around them, and violence, not plot.

And then 9 times out of 10 they off themselves.

title is dry but
the result is terrible

i prefer 'a judgement'
devastating as a word uses too much drama and takes away from the potency of the whole plot, in my opinion

everyone else has said things about lighting and acting
so i wont

Thanks for the comments, folks! I did the lighting effect frame per frame - it truly needs a lot of time, but shouldn't we all put the most effort in our films, as we could?

I just uploaded a new version with Subtitles and a better contrast look.
Enjoy it.

Strange, the short film I'll be making soon involves a gun. The plot revolves around it and it's ultimatley about why you shouldn't use violence to solve your problems.

hmm

EDIT: So I watched it again. It made way more sense. However, a few facts I've read about AIDS in the past. "According to a report by researchers Norman Hearst and Stephen Hulley in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the odds of a heterosexual becoming infected with AIDS after one episode of penile-vaginal intercourse with someone in a non-high-risk group without a condom are one in 5 million. With a condom it's even safer--one in 50 million. " Not like that is important to the story, because obviously the guy is selfish and stupid to kill himself over it. I guess I sound like I'm being to critical on something not very long, but it just makes me angry when I see someone act like that, whether in real life or a film.

So yours isn't one of the 9 movies ;)

I think he's kinda right, because we often see people making the "gun" in their movies seem like if it was the leading role ^^

Anyways, a gun is a deadly weapon so it is not unusual that it often has to be in combination with violence.

Oh, I wasn't saying you spent too much time for the lighting effect. I was just surprised. It's rare for people to put so much effort into small ideas like that, but it did come off really well and I'm far more impressed that knowing it wasn't just a 3 second idea you tossed in and happened to like.

Good job!

Before I tackle anything else, I will say that I liked the editing and the look of the short.

Maybe this is just me talking, but isn’t it time everyone gets away from the guns? I can understand the finality of using a gun or a knife, because resolution needs to be reached in four or five minutes. However, that does not make it an excuse. Who here solves all of their problems with their deuce-deuce?

If you dissect this film you have a character who: a) has unprotected casual sex, b) smokes, c) seems to confront a stressful situation with a gun within reach. How then is he so concerned about his health when it comes to AIDS? Also, he may be HIV positive but not have AIDS… (on top of the odds metioned above)

I’m sure the majority of people here engaging in the liberal arts would claim that media does not affect the individual’s thought process and increase the probability of violence. But I’m betting that in the next 10 years we’ll start seeing some conclusive research – off the top of my head I’ll cite the study that confirmed that songs talking about sexual situations increased sexual activities among younger teens. I don’t need conclusive research as I can browse the films posted here or on studentfilms.com and the majority of them contain guns, knives, and other miscellaneous life-extracting devices – it has affected our thought process and we find it easier to resort to violence.

I have an idea for the next DVX User competition: “No deaths attributed to violence or suicide competition.” The world can be downright sickening, but then again I see more good turns done then bad, and I just hope to run across the films that attest to the beauty of life, instead of characters damning their creator for their sorry lot.

With that, I’ll end the soapbox cry.

Oh, and I should probably restate that I liked the editing and the overall look of the short.

Good work man, I enjoyed it! The only thing that bugged me was the phone "ringing" without the phone lighting up as it normaly does. By the way what language are they speaking?
