Hi all, can anyone answer this for me....

When is the Next Generation HVX200 expected on the market?

What are some of the bugs that Panasonic has to work out of the current model?

I need to know because I am looking to buy one brand new..

Rob

The new HVX looks a ways off since Pansonic ironed out a lot of the potential "bugs" with the DVX series and can upgrade the HVX200 with firmware upgrades.

Issues that could possibly be fixed with an 'A' model would be:

-sharper LCD screen.
-ability to name clips.
-better low light performance.
-(POSSIBLY) H264 encoding for more P2 space.

If it was released next year, it would most likely be in the second half since it wasn't announced at the latest NAB.

Indeed, though that may be better seen as a natural evolution forwards, than "ironing out a bug". Ideally it should come together with variable bitrate. This would be even more significant if combined with a move to Compact Flash instead of P2 - the faster versions of that are nowadays well capable of the speeds necessary even for DVCProHD, at a fraction the price/GB. It would also allow for a smaller camera, and more than two slots.

My biggest gripe is the form factor, which is now unsuitable for a camera of its weight, even before you start to add accessories. In this respect at least, I hope Panasonic have taken a long hard look at JVCs HD100.

Ability to flip the image for use with the M2 is another feature that should be added with new firmware. Oh, and the ability to have the focusassist on an external monitor would also be great.

- - - Panasonic will announce the upgraded version of the HVX just days after you purchase your first-gen model. ----

I KNOW this will happen....

Yeah, it officially came out in December, but people like me, who were 18th on a waiting list, didn't get theirs until months later.

It seems to me that the DVX100a came out rought 12-18 months after the original. But it seems like at least another 2-2.5 years until the DVX100b. Anyone? Am I close?

Yeah, that's pretty spot on darwin. I too am waiting the current HVX200 out for a newer model as the current one just doesn't have anything to make me say "That's the camera I need RIGHT NOW!!!" compared to all the other things currently available and those that are on their way. Panasonic is going the right way with variable frame rates and the tapeless formfactor though.

However, if they would just hurry up and release some firmware updates ASAP to fix a few issues and add some features (ie. image flip), then that'd be fantastic and would make me lean more towards the HVX200. However, I'm starting to think that 1080P will be the talk of the town come next year and 720P, even though it's practically indistinguishable from 1080i, will no longer cut it. 2K is also another possibility and I'm sure Panasonic would be thinking about a lot of things if they were to do another HVX model.

I really think that you're talking about something different when you mention stuff like that. Every time this comes up, people wish for things like higher rez CCDs, a tape deck, and a bunch of other stuff Pansonic will never offer with just an upgrade.

There were some great improvments between the DVX100, 100A, and 100B but nothing of this magnitude. The best we can hope for is slight modifications, not a redesign of everything.

And HVX300 may well have 2k resolution and a bunch of other stuff but that's most likely quite a ways off.

Image flip isn't even that important to me as focusing with an M2 minimally requires a Marshall, and preferably something like a Sony 17 inch HD monitor. If focus is "critical" in HD, it's even more true with an M2, and the crappy LCD on the HVX is just not cut out for the task.

I expect a device with no MiniDV drive at all... maybe four P2 slots or... if they want to blow the @ss off the tapeless workflow, they could put a blueray drive instead of a miniDV drive and leave the two P2 cards. By doing that, I think they would effectively KILL Sony and force Canon to provide a non-HDV HD option on the XLH2...

ash =o)

I would like to see a higher rez LCD as well, (i thought there was something wrong with my camera when I saw the LCD for the first time), but having the LCD be able to flip? for some reason, I don't think we'll see that on the HVX200a
The fact that you have to flip your image makes me think the world of 35mm adapters is still in the grassroots stages. I'd rather see more adapters flip the image for the camera.

That would be cool if Serious Magic's DV-Rack could do the "Flipping" on-screen, so you could look at your monitor while panning and moving your camera around,.. Does anyone know if the current version of DV-Rack does this? If so, GREAT Selling point!

Yes, or even better, a blueray drive and four Compact Flash slots. More memory for less money.
