When I was thrashing about in the early part of the year looking for a larger-storage solution for my HVX, I read here about how there were several options, including a laptop (bulky), P2 Store (expensive), Cineporter (not out yet), FS (not out yet) and Citidisk HD (not out yet).
In February, I started talking with a Vin Bruno of ProCon Digital Systems about ordering one of these things. It sounded pretty cool.
On March 1st of this year, I plunked down my credit card with him to "reserve" one. I was told it was just around the corner.
On March 21st, I was mailed by Vin Bruno again, being told it was "almost ready" and I could expect it to be shipped out on the 30th.
On JUNE 25th, I mailed Vin Bruno at ProCon and said:
"Hi there. You guys never got back to me, and in the meantime I bought
the Panasonic P2 Store thingy. Thanks for being so helpful in the
beginning, there! I hope things eventually work out for you, but I
don't need the thing at the moment."
I had gone with the P2 Store (expensive) in the three months since I last heard anything from ProCon. I kept shooting my films (still am!) from then on.
Today, August 18th, a Citidisk HD showed up at my door.
This, I assume, means several things.
First, it means that I was charged for this thing, either $1200 or less depending on what model I was shipped (I have not opened it). This is money I didn't want to spend, having already dropped $2200 or whatever for my P2 cards and P2 store. I've been using them, I'm fine with them for the moment.
Second, apparently being five months late with no updates on a $1200 piece of equipment is acceptable to ProCon. I don't agree with that opinion.
Third, apparently shipping a five-month-backordered piece of equipment with absolutely no updates at all during this five months and sending it out with no notification this was being done is also acceptable to ProCon. Again, I do not agree.
ProCon's letter indicated a 30 day moneyback guarantee. Considering their track record with what goes into their letters, I see pain ahead. I'm writing this here in case people were roped into ordering this item and might have moved/changed addresses/changed lives since they made their pre-orders... your stuff is coming, and your credit cards are likely charged.
For my own bit, I am already reading about negative aspects of this item (firmware upgrades needed to work, bad track records with Citidisk) and I don't want it at all. I'm considering a Cineporter but only after it's been out a while; for the moment I'm happy with my environment and what I did buy.
Heads up!
