"Great" Movies that Suck

Stas, I think you misread the title of the thread.:)

Unless, all those suck for you. In that case... wow.

No misread. :) Hate, to varying degrees, every one of those movies.

Short Cuts, on the other hand, I love.

War Of The Worlds- tom Cruise version.

The Blair Witch Project- I walked out.

Wind Talkers- John Woo, what happened to you?

Matrix III Revolution, I just cant talk abpout it or I get pissed.

Event Horizon

Lost In Space

Starship Troopers (I read the book, I still watch the movie but I get peeved)

there's more, but I've blanked them out.

For the first, he left Hong Kong and "sold out."

For the second, in the past virtual characters (until Gollum and Kong, I know I'm a Peter Jackson mark) pretty much ruined anything they were in. Even a great movie gets deflated by cutesy or generally annoying technological rubbish.

...And The Nominees For the "WTF Is All The Hoopla About" Award Are...

-2001: A Space Odyssey
-A Clockwork Orange
-Boggie Nights
-Magnolia
-Traffic

-both Crash films (Cronenberg's & Haggis')
-The Piano
-Lost In Translation
-Fargo
-Amelie
-Do The Right Thing
-Donnie Darko
-Sideways

I heard that Orson Welles' TOUCH OF EVIL was awesome.

After the shakiest 4 minute opening moving shot that bored me to tears...it only got worse when the car blew up off screen and Orson tubby-mc-tub-alot rolled into frame mumbling incoherently. The jig was up when Charlton Heston opens his mouth and he is playing a MEXICAN. Nice moustache, that really sold me.

Bad start...just got worse...ended like the Hindenburg. Please don't let me be the only one who thought this was horrendous.

PS I absolutely loved Citizen Kane.o

I've sort of dreaded throwing a list up in here. but we're all friends right? no reason to take a list of movies personal. :) for one reason or another, these are some "great" films that Zak (me) thinks very little of...

Crash (2004)
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Mystic River (2003)
Forrest Gump (1994)
Dances with Wolves (1990) tuh-tonka!
Platoon (1986)
Patton (1970)
The Usual Suspects (1995)
American Beauty (1999)
Brazil (1985)
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Some Like It Hot (1959)
Bullitt (1968)
The Green Mile (1999)
Shrek (2001)
Gladiator (2000)
Amores Perros (2000)
Finding Neverland (2004)
Gone with the Wind (1939)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The Graduate (1967)
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
M*A*S*H (1970)
Tootsie (1982)
Blazing Saddles (1974)

and this will land me on someone's shitlist for sure... The Sixth Sense (1999) and Signs (2002).

The Sixth Sense (1999) and Signs (2002)

Yeah, it will :Drogar-Evil(DBG): , The Sixth Sense was the best movie of 1999. While I liked Signs, it was for me M. Night's weakest movie.

Now regarding the rest of your list:
Forrest Gump (1994) Okay, but not one of my favorites
Dances with Wolves (1990) tuh-tonka! Absolutely hated it. I can't stand Costner and this movie was way too self-indulgent.
Platoon (1986) This was a decent Vietnam War flick but not great.
Patton (1970) Here we differ. I loved this movie.
The Usual Suspects (1995) My favorite Spacey performance. (Well, at least one of them.) Loved this movie, too.
American Beauty (1999) Hated this one more than Dances.
Brazil (1985) Didn't care for it.
Requiem for a Dream (2000) I've never seen this movie.
Mystic River (2003) It was okay, watchable, but not great.
Crash (2004) entertainment, again, not great.
Million Dollar Baby (2004) This movie surprised me. I thought it was very well told.
Some Like It Hot (1959) okay, but ...
Bullitt (1968) Greatest car chase ever!!! Steve McQueen's the man. But he had better movies. i.e. Tom Horn, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Cincinnati Kid
The Green Mile (1999) I really enjoyed this one. Did you put it in here just to placate Hudson? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
Shrek (2001) Good, not great. My favorite in the animated whatever movie was Chicken Run
Gladiator (2000) Er...I think you must be mistaken. This movie was GRRRREAT!
Amores Perros (2000) It's not in English...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) <I should catch flak for that statement :Drogar-Evil(DBG): >
Finding Neverland (2004) This movie was much better than I expected.
Gone with the Wind (1939) This was a movie of another less politically correct time and it suffers popular opinion today for it. It was quite an accomplishment for its time...but then so was Citizen Kane which I didn't care for.
The Wizard of Oz (1939) Oh, c'mon now. We grew up with this.
The Graduate (1967) Agree. I used to like it but it hasn't aged well.
Bonnie and Clyde (1967) Agree
M*A*S*H (1970) Liked the movie...hated the t.v. show.
Tootsie (1982) This was okay, but not great.

There you go, liked some hated other and then there were those in-between.

I can agree with all but the two above. Fargo was tremendous, the Coen Brother's best movie. Followed closely by Blood Simple and Miller's Crossing.

Now, regarding Sideways, I liked it. But I'm also a little put off by it. I loved Virginia Madsen and thought Paul Giamatti's performance was great. I could really get into the "wine speak." But on the other hand, the characters, with the exception of Virginia's character, were just not very likable and therefore hard to have a rooting interest in. This is a strange call for me. Maybe, I didn't like it as much as I thought, afterall.

Syriana (2005) While this movie wasn't THAT bad, I just didn't find it a compelling movie.
Capote (2005) Found this to be incredibly boring. My recommendation: In Cold Blood

It was pissed on by audiences and critics alike.
Yeah, I have to laugh at that one. It has also been the butt of many a comedian's joke. In fact, it's in danger of gaining cult status for being so bad.

I think Chad's right on with that list. Except for Fargo which I find to be the best thing the Coen brothers did. Sideways is a guilty pleasure, but I can't really say it's good.

Yeah, I was thinking more of the hype and anticipation leading up to it's release. People were certainly expecting something great. I remember my mom was so disappointed.
