Grabs from new super epic action movie (DVX102b, PD170, XL2)

If you're going to CC with a tv you need to calibrate it. I think people around here get very anal when it comes to broadcast colors. obviously, not all of us can afford a thousand dollar PAL/NTSC production monitor to see how are works look. Even then everyones television set isn't calibrated the same either. So it's a loose loose situation. You can get pretty close IMO with a tv. My color grading might be to contrasty. It's not really a big deal, unless you plan on getting this on DVD or Local stations.

Well, i dont have space on my desk in any case. The goal of this is part win a local film competition for a 5000 prize, in part to get a grant, in part to make it look really really great on the portfolios of those involved, big part coz it's fun, big part to suck it up to the rest of singapore who never knew 16 year old kids ran around with DVX's :D

Malcolm, great shots! It's like I'm looking at screenshots from asian Rainbow Six. Like the guns and the outfits. Seems like you really had huge cast to organize. I too love action themes, so I'm really sorry that we live so far away, cause we could do together some great action movie. Keep with the good work, man.

Hey, nice shots. I have a question, where can I purchase the body armors that you guys are wearing in your short? I need to get some of those for my production. Thanks.

well, i can only help you if you live in singapore... My friend, also the producer of the thingy bought them from a shop somewhere in Chinatown i believe...

damn. those body armor are perfect for what i need. anyway you can ship some down here for me? =)

Canvas. Thick canvas, and i think some of them have some sort of tough cloth inside. Basically normal clothes on steroids. Haven't tested for being bulletproof yet - the cast protests

I also purchase the airsoft replicas for my movies, and they really look realistic. Unfortunatelly, they don't have body armors in my town. Will you'll using CG muzzle fire?

Yeap, CG. Not real CG though, unless i can figure out how to use after effects in time - just a flash at the gun nozzle in the shape of muzzle flash. Most of the guns werent airsoft replicas - just cheap toy guns from toys r us, but spraypainted black. As a result alot of them kinda broke in half during shooting. Duct tape is essential.

I was doing some CG muzzle flash for one my short film. For a single shot from a weapon you only need 2-3 frames, I prefer 3. It looked very realistic at the end. And when you ad realistic sound, maaaan! If you are doing some crossfire shooting, make sure you add noise from bullets richosheting from wall and metal, and glass breaking. It will really boost the action.

Hey that sounds interesting! Mind linking me to some of your work and how it looks like? Maybe a tut.? so far i use premiere and overlay a photoshop, along with lighting effects and of course the sound.

Well, I was doing a short for a festival, and had mad 3 CG shots in it. I think I did well in very little time. I looked all over the net for some pics of gunfire. And I found some pictured in front of black background. I selected the fire out of the picture and placed it on the footage. I rotated it so it fits the muzzle direction. On first and third frame I used medium size of flash and on second full size of flash. But keep in my that I'm in a PAL region of 25fps so maybe you can put maybe 4 or 5 frames for NTSC footage. And it is very important to synchronize the sound of shot with the flash. Use audio waveform to monitor your sound of blast and merge the loudest tone of gunshot with the frame with largest flash on a weapon. For some close ups it looks great if you have empty cartridges falling from the weapon, but that's pretty complicated.

Rapier: about the cc, i don't exactly have a pro tv monitor - mine's a viewsonic gaming rig...So i adhere to the mantra of 'if it looks good, its good'. That said i will be pretty anxious as to how well it'll look if it gets shown on a digital projector or a TV... When i get the final cc going would anyone care to volunteer to moderate it? Or maybe i'll try to get one of my old tv sets and rig it up to my graphic card through TV out. That'll be useful.

I don't have a pro monitor either, but I do have a higher end TV which while not a monitor, has been calibrated the best I can, and is certainly better than nothing. The color might not be exactly the same as on an NTSC monitor, but I am usually more concerned with contrast than color. For color I can look at my comps monitor, and keeping things broadcast safe is a snap.

As long as you have a firewire card, you have a TV monitor out. In Vegas, (Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop CS2, and maybe even FCP) you can veiw externally through your fiewire. You hook up a camera, tell the program you are using to preview via firewire, set the camera to VCR mode, and plug the firewire in and the camera's Svideo or RCA output to your TV. It's pretty simple. I have an old broken Sony Handycam permanently attached to my computer. It cant play or record, so I got it for 10 bucks. But, the firewire interface and output to TV still works, so I have a constant preview device for super cheap.

NTSC monitors are great to have, but even veiwing your stuff on a regular TV will give you a sense of what it will look like. Will it be 100% accurate, no, but it will certainly put you in the ballpark, and hell, eveyone's TV is different anyway.

The still look pretty good, but of course they'll get a lot of post cc...

Here's the thing that everyone seems to be missing... MalcolmOng is SIXTEEN years old! The fact that this looks this good at that age is freakin awesome... keep up the good work!

Awesome man. Beautiful work. Let us see your CC counterparts & some footage when you have it - I'd like to see what everyone here is referring to on the CC side because everything looks great to me.

Well, I suck at cc i think, but i tried my hand at it. At first i was a bit ashamed to post it, but hell, worth a shot..

Rubix: CC generally means upping the contrast, checking for color accuracy, etc. Basically they make the grabs look a whole lot nicer than originally, but thanks for the compliment anyway :D

It already looks much better Malcolm. I have another idea. Try to put some cheap flashlights under the barrels of SWAT weapons. If you're not done with the shooting, if you are, never mind. Keep up the good work.
