SPARROW DVD Cover & Label Design

First of all, they all look great.

But if I were to judge a dvd by its cover, I would think V1 was a film noir mystery. So either V2 or V3 is the way to go. But the WIDESCREEN pops too much on V2. It's distracting from the title. Maybe white text on black and a smaller font.

No matter what you decide it's obvious the DVD will look great. Good luck!

Thanks PK! :) I'm leaning towards #3 cover, and #2 label.

Working on the menu design now, which will be fully animated with score, transition videos to the next menu, etc. Exciting so far ... just a lot of time to tweak the way I want it.

If I was walking about a video store, Cover #3 would definitely catch my attention.

But, I shouldn't have to tilt my head to read the title. I'd switch the font into a vertical text. I'd also consider adding the tagline above the title just off to the right of her head. "A love betrayed..."

Label 2 by far. Adding the films title over the empty smoke space.(it's cool to have it blank, but a purchaser shouldn't have to guess what dvd it is if it gets misplaced)

I'm coming late to the game, but here's my $0.02 anyway :)

I like cover #3 the best and Label #2. But I think you need to put the title somewhere on the label.

Peace,
Larry

Thanks guys for the input. I didn't want to take away from that cool empty smoke space, but I'll add the title & put it up later today.

As far as the title on the front of the cover being over head vs. on the side, again, I was trying to go with something a little different/edgy, but more importantly for that particular shot, if I don't put the title there, it'll be a ton of empty space ... so it balanced it.

Anyone else think I should put the title over the top as well? I could fit the tagline on the side of her someplace, but I had a friend question having two tag lines on the box ... one in front & one in back (Where will you turn ... is on the back).

Nice Covers Norm! Diggin Numero 3!

Here's a thought:

dang Hank! I really dig that pic on the front. I'd make widescreen smaller though... that front pic is my fave though.

Envision,

Nice stuff - Version 3 is my favorite. I will be the one dissenting vote for leaving some Widescreen versus Full Screen label right on the cover, even if it is more understated / incorporated into the artwork.

My wife brought home yet another full screen DVD (March of the Penguins) because she said she couldn't figure out which was which. She won't be making that mistake again anytime soon. No, not anytime soon.

J/K, but really, leave some WS or FS label right there on the cover. When laymen have to read through the logos, world-format icons and audio encoding labels to figure out whether the lump is WS versus FS it's just too much work.

Just an example... yeah that picture draws you in I thought. I just wanted to give a different prespective. Don't mind the widescreen text, I just threw that in there.

That picture makes it look like it is going to be a indie horror film. I think cover version #3 has the right "feel" to it and the balance is right, IMHO, with the title down the side. You could try turning the letters upright, but still have the name read vertically down the side....however, I think it is fine the way it is.

Interesting approach, Larry, I'll check it out. Otherwise, I can't imagne people having to turn their head to the side to read it, as they never have to do that to read the spines, which are ALWAYS that direction (just thought of that).

Hank, I dig that pic, and I had considered that before, but unfortunately it's a frame grab from the film, so it's going to look horrifically grainy getting blown up to the right size.

I think it's fine turned the way it is...I just read someone else mentioning the turning the head thing, that's where the suggestion came from. Personally, I think it's fine the way it is.

I like the pic with the green eyes, but it doesn't seem to portray the right image (again, this is just IMHO) for the film.

yeah... I kinda figured you were working off of screen grabs. I just love the way her eyes draw you in. Gives me chills thinkin about it! I still say go with numero 3!

Yeah the eyes ARE cool, but Larry's right ... the CU of that pic says horror movie ... probably also because of how pixelated it is, so it kind of messes with the pic some. I do love those eyes, however.

I'll be going with cover #3 and label #2 (adding title to it). Now my lead actress has chimed in! LOL. I gave her & her husband the link to this thread to check out, and she likes her abs in label #1 ... so now I've got to see if I can doctor the pic in cover #3 (different pic, much farther away) & give it some shadows, etc. to make the abs look as defined as they do in the closer label shot.

Anyone here a master at airbrush work for muscle definition in Photoshop?

The current DVD case cover is blown out. You'll need to redo that image to retain the same detail in the abs as the one on the actual DVD disc front in image 1.

Some of the blow out could be from the added contrast I added, so I'll look at a rework of the photo from scratch ...

I can also see about taking the flesh parts of label 1, and layering them over cover 1 with some opacity adjustments.

It won't be consistant with the rest of the image because of the spiked contrast levels.

Working from scratch would be the best choice.
