gitzo 7680c v.s. k-tek ke-100ccr

Charli

cool little "title"
I believe I would do well with either boom pole and I'm ready to buy this item at this time.

The gitzo weights 1.98 oz, the k-tek weighs 23.5 ounces.
The gitzo extends 12.5 feet, the k-tek extends 9.2 feet.
The gitzo runs the wire inside (is that correct) the k-tek has internal cable with side connector.

If you had to choose, which pole would you buy as your FIRST boom pole.

Charli

I like Ktek poles more while I like the locks and threads on Gitzo poles more :)

Sorry, I know this didn't help at all... Honestly, its 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other. You will be happy with either unit.

To help, no one I know has not been happy with Ktek anything, whereas some people ***** about Gitzo... I own both and am happy with both.

-Jeremy

I think Jeremy meant, "...no one has been UNhappy..." Maybe not. But no one I know has been unhappy with Ktek anything...except maybe Jeremy's friends.

Also, I believe the Gitzo probably weighs 1.98 POUNDS, definately not ounces.

Ktek has always made top end high quality poles. Gitzo is the Kmart brand of poles BUT they have been producing better products lately.

Blah, blah, blah...I would get the Ktek (but not by a wide margin).

Cheers

Hey Charli,

The gitzo is 1.98 oz or 19.8 oz?
If it was 1.98 oz, then by all means go with the Gitzo! I believe it's a typo.

What's the price difference between the two?
If there's a drastic difference, then go with the K-tek. The gitzo locking mechanism would be better, but they both do the same thing. They are both almost the same weight, but one extends about 3 feet longer. Having a longer pole would definitely help a lot leaving some counterweight behind you.

My first was a Rode boompole. Very light about 16 oz, very long at 10 feet, very inexpensive at $75 at Sweetwater, very cool features like internal cabling. Just a thought.

Wabbit got it right, it's 1 pound .98 ounces.

Price difference: $185 gitzo, $219 k-tek. That is only $34 difference so that is
not a selling point for me.

Weight, length, weight, length - gawd this is annoying.

Charli

psst: Jeremy - you are a big help (note sarcasm) - lol

Charli,

I haven't ever owned a Gitzo pole, but I do have two K-Teks. I love both of my K-Tek's, and Manfred is just plain a nice guy, so I would lean towards supporting him/K-Tek.

Phil

That's an important point. A very stupid boom op broke one of my Kteks a few years back and when I email Ktek to buy a replacement section, Manfred's daughter called me directly and sent me a replacement section for free. I don't think you can find that kind of service from Gitzo.

Ktek has always had a great locking knuckle. 1/4 turn from tight to loose. My experience, in the past, with gitzo has been a very klunky knuckle that slips loose and takes longer turns to tighten and loosen. Again, Gitzo has been making improvements. Perhaps their newer poles are better now.

If Gitzo's are really improved and the field between them has flattened then the extra length is nice. There is such a thing as too much pole and that is why it's a good idea to get short one and a long one. But if you only are going to get one, the longer the better, usually.

Cheers

Ktek is good stuff, I guess I was saying that no one I know has been unhappy, which is the same as saying no one I know has not been happy... meaning everyone is happy or am I just over thinking this... My English degree might be failing me or this no nicotine thing is just screwing with me.

-Jeremy

LOL, no you were right. Your degree is safely intact. Double negatives always throw me. Sorry for jumping the gun on that correction. :embarasse

Good luck on the no nicotine thing.

I just bought a pack and am chewing on them to beat the physical part of the habit... as long as I bite under a pack a day then I've made improvement :)

Regarding the poles... both of them are great, you'll be happy either way.

Jeremy,

This forum is the perfect place to kick the nicotine habit - take your frustration out on the overanswered questions that come in. ;-)

Thanks fellas, I'm going to buy the k-tek because today, size does not matter -
omg I laughing at me jokes.

hey let me add a brilliant ktek story -

there is no K-tek in South Africa. I have never even seen one in reality (only online - poor me). There was a there was a thread at JWsound recently talking about the K-Zeppelin, which I am very interested in but (again) have never even seen. So I said that.

Next day theres an email in my inbox from Manfred saying he wants to send me one (for free) to try out in South Africa, as they have no representation here and I would otherwise never see one.

Now, we are going to sort out getting it to me later this week, and Im also going to buy a Ktek boom from him to make the whole thing worth his while - but DAMN - one email has just made me a Ktek fan for life, and Ive never even used their products.

So Im glad you're going with Ktek charli, they do deserve everyones support for service like that.

i have two booms, one is a gitzo and the other a ktek.

the gitzo is the 2.7' to 9' model, 4 section, 1.15 pounds and costs $189

the ktec is the 3' to 12.8' model, 5 section, weighs a LOT more and costs almost $700

the gitzo was my first boom.

the ktek was a fairly recent aquisition.

the gitzo is a LOT simpler in that it is just a solid pole and you wrap the wire around it.

it weighs a LOT less than the ktek and it doesn't flex at all.

the ktek is nice in that you just put the shockmount/mic on the end, plug in the cable end and then extend the boom and plug in an xlr to the end of the boom and you are ready to go.

but sometimes i miss the weight of the gitzo.

the ktek is a much larger diameter and if you aren't careful you can get noise from the internal cable moving around.

you can also get noise from your hands if you adjust your grip during a take.

with the gitzo you never have that problem because it is solid instead of being hollow. but if you want to adjust the gitzo quickly it is harder because the cable on the outside has to be adjusted.

all of that said, i keep bringing the gitzo with me but i haven't used it since i got the ktek.

if you go with ktek i would strongly recommend the right angle cable version and also check into the hodges weights they sell. it makes for a really comfortable day of booming when the weight is balance back where your hands are.

matthew

Me too..get a right angle...And maybe some of those counterweights to let up on the arm fatigue.

Avalon k-tek boom came in the mail yesterday. It ROCKS!
Thanks for everyone's help, thanks Jeremy.

definitely go with the right angle, in the real world i couldn't imagine not being able to set down my boom on the end and having to either disconnect the xlr cable or put it down horizontally...

yes i LOVE the hodges counterweight!

i started with one and it was enough to balance out a hypercardioid at medium lengths.

i got a second one and it is super comfortable with the ktek 152ccr extended out all the way to 12' 8" and with a senn 416 in a ktek zepp

plus it is nice how easily you can take off the second hodges weight in case you switch from a heavier mic like the 416 to a lighter mic like the schoeps mk41.
