Any ideas on the best way to make my HVX look a GRINDHOUSE horror flick?

I'm making a horror film and I want it too like it was shot on 16mm and was made in the seventies? I'm talking like The original Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left ect.
What's the best way to get that look on the HVX?

Shoot in 16! It's cheap. lol

or

I would shoot a bunch of tests and play with looks in post. You can put your footage heads up with frame grabs from a movie you like. Off the top of my head. Older stocks = larger grain structure, so a grain plugin - gotta play with that lattitude and color curve - maybe even a slight blur to the footage to make it look older - sepia it to yellow a bit. If you put a frame around it, like you could see the edges of a 16mm film gate with their oval corners, that would help sell it. You know, all the typical stuff. Just use a combo of the plugins and your original vision to make it stand out and not just look like magic bullet misfire.

Also, shoot a lot, test contrast ratios, colors, a lot of it is in the production design. If you splatter a wall with scary looking dirt textures, it will look a lot better than plain white.

Etc.

Shoot it as clean as possible

and then mess it up in post

Thats what I thinking .

Just wondering anyone had ideas to get this look while shooting. I actually am going to shoot a 16mm slasher sequence that the killer watch's before he starts his rampage. It's based on a real guy called danny Rolling, he killer 5 people in my hometown of Gainesville Florida.

This actually shouldn't be too hard. If you want to try it in camera (which I don't reccommend), you can up the gain. This will add noise and the HVX's noises looks a lot like 16mm film grain.

A better way is to get the best looking in camera files you can (clean like John suggested) and do all the changes in post. You can do a lot of cool stuff with DVCPro HD.
